Fourteen Ohio sheep producers, industry representatives, and an OSU Extension Educator visited five different Michigan Lamb Marketing and Dry Lot/Confinement Sheep Operations the weekend of Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1, 2023. This year’s tour was jointly sponsored by the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association and Hardin County OSU Extension. In addition to enjoying the fall color of the trees, producers were able to ask questions of the operators and see these farms as part of this tour in the state of Michigan. Topics included facilities, production, management, and marketing of lamb.

Head Out on the Highway: Driving and medications

In 1967, Steppenwolf wrote their hit Born to Be Wild. The song begins by telling listeners to “Get your motor runnin’/Head out on the highway/Lookin' for adventure” and we have an image in our head; cruising down an open road in our dream car, radio playing our favorite tune and feeling the freedom of adventure. We even go back to the excitement of passing our driving test, obtaining that coveted driver’s license and gaining the independence of exploration. For some of us, it opens a conversation if it is safer to leave the car in the garage and take a ride in the passenger seat due to the use of some medications.

In September, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) released a study focusing on medications that alter road test performances among healthy older adults with good cognitive function. Based on previous literature, older adults are at a greater risk of being involved in an automotive accident compared to middle-aged adults. There could be multiple factors contributing to this claim, including being frail and having more cognitive impairment.

The Ada High School volleyball team was swept in three sets by top-seeded New Bremen in the Div. IV district semifinals Tuesday night, October 24, at Wapakoneta.

The Bulldogs lost to the powerful Cardinals 25-14, 25-8, 25-5 to finish their season 13-11.

Top-seeded MAC tri-champion New Bremen improved to 20-4 with the sweep.

The Cardinals advance to the district finals against league foe Marion Local (17-7) in Wapakoneta.

“We came out strong and really fought hard and battled in set one,” said Ada head coach Kyleigh Woodruff. “We struggled to side out in sets two and three, and they had too many runs against us.

“New Bremen is a great team with hard float-servers who kept us off balance,” she continued. “They were able to put the ball away offensively.”
