University presents chamber music concert with guests from Romania

 

The Ohio Northern University Department of Music presents “An Evening of Chamber Music,” featuring members of the Arad Philharmonic, in Presser Hall’s Snyder Recital Hall on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

This event is the final stage of an exchange program between ONU and the Arad Philharmonic, located in Western Romania. The Arad Philharmonic is under the administrative direction of Dr. Alin Vacean, with recital members Dorina Moldovan on oboe and Sandu Moldovan on bassoon.

The performance also will feature ONU faculty members Thomas Hunt, professor of music and chair of the Department of Music, on French horn, Florin Simioanca, lecturer in the Department of Music, on viola and Rachel Pinkney, lecturer in the Department of Music, on cello. Cecilia Johnson, an instructor from Adrian College, will join the ensemble on violin, and Kristen Topham will serve as the staff accompanist on piano.

ONU student performers include Elizabeth Druesedow, a sophomore accounting major from Sharon Center, Ohio, on clarinet and Alec Flemming, a freshman mechanical engineering major from Powell, Ohio, on contrabass.

The concert will open with Bach’s “Fugue XX” arranged by Jan Leontsky and performed by Dorina Moldovan, Sandu Moldovan, Pinkney and Simioanca. Mozart’s “Sonata for Bassoon and Cello in B-flat Major” will follow with Sandu Moldovan and Pinkney. The first half will conclude with the “Concertino for Oboe and Bassoon” after Methfessel, arranged by E. Jancourt and performed by Dorina Moldovan, Sandu Moldovan and Topham.

The second half of the concert will feature Beethoven’s “Septet in E-flat Major,” a 38-minute piece that will be performed by Sandu Moldovan, Pinkney, Simioanca, Hunt, Johnson, Druesedow and Flemming.

Additionally, Vacean will present an evening of jazz music in the lobby of The Inn at Ohio Northern University on Friday, Sept. 21, from 5-7 p.m.
