ONU to present ‘The Soul Rebels’

Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts will present The Soul Rebels Brass Band in the Stambaugh Theater on Friday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m. The concert is being held in conjunction with the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration week at ONU.

The Soul Rebels is an eight-piece New Orleans-based brass ensemble that incorporates elements of soul, jazz, funk, hip-hop, rock and pop music within a contemporary brass band framework. The band grew from their New Orleans brass style out of the desire of original members Lumar LeBlanc and Derrick Moss to play the music they heard on the radio with respect to the New Orleans brass band tradition.

The band has built its career around an eclectic live show that harnesses the power of horns and percussion in a funky party-like atmosphere. The band routinely plays more than 250 shows a year and has been described by The Village Voice as “the missing link between Public Enemy and Louis Armstrong.”

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $7 for ONU students and children. The Freed Center box office is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Phone orders are accepted with American Express, MasterCard, VISA or Discover by calling 419-772-1900. Tickets also are available online at www.freedcenter.com
