15 minutes with Austin Dumbaugh - there's something about his stare

15 minutes with Ada High School senior, Austin Dumbaugh

What are your plans after high school?
I’m attending Rhodes State College, Lima and will major in nursing.

What classes are you taking this semester?
Yearbook, sociology, astronomy, English, personal finance and Trig.

Do you have your prom tux rented?
Yeah. It’s a blue vest.

Where are you going to eat?
Tokyo Steak House, Findlay. A group of us, probably 14. The girls made the reservation. I just show up.

Give me your best tee pee story.
(Long pause and lots of laughing from others sitting around him.)

This sounds pretty interesting.

It involved two carloads including, probably, Dakota, Hunter, Spencer, Tate, Matt, Saed, maybe Colton and myself. We tee peed Nick Simon’s house – probably because he wasn’t with us.

A neighbor heard us and called the police. We ran into a cornfield…(lots of other things happened next)…and it ultimately had a happy ending.

What’s your favorite movie?
(Long pause.) Probably Step Brothers. I’d give it a 5.

How do you store music and how many songs do you have?
I have 1,600 songs on my iPod.

That’s a lot!
Not really. Spencer Archer has lots more.

What kind of music do you have?
Rock, Rap and Oldies, from the ‘70s and ‘80s.

What’s the worst grade you ever received?
It was an eighth grade algebra test. I had a 34.

Do you remember who you sat beside in first grade?
Well, my teacher was Mrs. Gossard. I don’t know who I sat beside.

Do you remember the first over-nighter you had?
It was probably Matthew Wilcox’s first or second grade birthday party.

If you could take anyone to a restaurant in Ada, who would it be and what restaurant would it be?
(Another long pause.) Probably Melanie Iglesias. And I’d probably go to Saed’s house. (Saed, listening in starts laughing.)

I understand you throw the discus. Any chance you could break the high school record?
The record is 165 feet six and one-half inches, set in 1967 or close to it. My longest toss is 157 feet. I think I can break it.

Asking Saed:
Is there anything else I could ask him?

Saed:
Ask him about his stare. He stares at people until they blink.

Okay, if I take a photo of you will you give me the stare?

Sure.
