Betty June Smith was a former town clerk for the Village of Alger

Betty June Smith, 93, died on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at 4:15 a.m. at Otterbein-Cridersville Nursing Home, Cridersville.

She was born on June 3, 1921, in Lima, Ohio to Everett and Frances (Davis) Edmiston and they preceded her in death. On July 3, 1941 she married James B. Smith who died in November of 2006. 

She was a 1939 graduate of Lima South High School. She previously worked in the 1960s as the town clerk and kept the books for the Village of Alger. She was a member of the Alger First United Methodist Church. She was very active in her church and was a member and a past president of the former Women’s Society of Christian Service (now the United Methodist Women).

She and her husband lived in Arizona from 1973-1983, where she was the office manager for the Bruce Church Ranch in Poston, Ariz.

She is survived by her six children: India Sue (Larry) Dodds of Pleasant Hill, Karen L. (Jim) Otterman of Holden, Mo., Judith E. (Eugene) Bailey of Lima, Nita J. (John) Hooker of Belle Center, J. Brian (Ann) Smith of Bluffton and David G. Smith of Creston; 17 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Smith; four great grandchildren; a brother, Francis (Fritz) Edmiston and a sister, Nancy Jo Raver.

Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Rev. Calvin Waugh officiating. Burial will be in Preston Cemetery, Alger.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Nov. 25,  from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alger First United Methodist Church.
