The Village Voice: Keeping Our streets, sidewalks and storm basins free from grass clippings

Grass is flying everywhere lately, as people take to their lawns to spruce things up. Keeping grass mowed is important in the Village, as it keeps our neighborhoods looking neat and tidy, and it helps reduce the insect population. Grass, weeds or rank vegetation that is over 6 inches in height is a violation of Codified Ordinance 521.08 (e), which is one more reason why keeping grass trimmed is a good idea.

Once the grass is cut, where is one of the worst places for it to end up? If you answered “the street,” you’re right! Grass that is blown into the street often ends up in the storm sewer system, and causes the system to plug up. When the catch basins and sewers get plugged up, storm water cannot get down into the system, and ends up sitting on the street. When water sits in the basins for a long period of time, it can attract mosquitoes and cause foul odors.

It is also a violation of Codified Ordinance 521.08 (d) to put grass, or other offensive material, in the public right of way, which includes the street, sidewalk, public right of way and storm basins. If you should accidentally blow grass into these areas, you are responsible for immediately cleaning up the area. In order to keep our streets well maintained, it is important to keep these types of materials off our streets.
