Freed Center brings the world's stage to Ada

Not to mention quality performances by ONU's Department of Theatre Arts

Where else, but in Ada…

could you attend the ultimate Michael Jackson experience, Ben Vereen’s homage to Frank Sinatra, Broadway’s Next H!t Musical, plus ONU student productions of The Pirates of Penzance, an International Play Festival and a host of other acts?

The answer: The Freed Center for the Performing Arts on the Ohio Northern University campus. You could say that the Center brings the world's stage to Ada.

On Wednesday morning, Rosanna Scott, Marketing and Communications Specialist of The Center, shared with Ada Area Chamber of Commerce members some of the upcoming shows and talked about The Center’s impact on Ada.

She told chamber members that The Freed Center offers top name performers. Adding that you’d have to go to Columbus and pay costly ticket prices to see the same programs that the Center brings right to Ada.

The four remaining appearances on the Center stage this spring are Ben Vereen on Jan. 28, Broadway’s Next H!t Musical on Feb. 11, Centennial Dixieland Jass Band on Feb. 26 and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble on March 18.

There are also many outstanding performances from the ONU Department of Theatre Arts.

The department’s remaining programs for this spring include Choreographers’ Showcase on Feb. 4-5; Elysium, a world premier, on Feb. 16-19; Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance on April 6-9; concluding with International Play Festival April 27-30.

“This is the 26th season for The Freed Center,” she said. “We are already working on next season’s performance schedule.”

Tickets for all productions are on sale at Freed Center box office, open Mondays through Fridays, noon to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tickets are also available on line at www.freedcenter.com.

According to David Dellifield, Ada chamber president, “Scott’s talk was the first in a series of monthly presentations, which are part of a new format by the Ada chamber.”

The chamber meets monthly in the Deans’ Heritage Room in McIntosh Center at ONU. Meetings, open to the public, are the third Wednesday of each month from 8 to 9 a.m.

In place of a February breakfast meeting, the chamber will hold its annual meeting and dinner at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15.

The meeting is in The Wishing Well at McIntosh. Tickets are $15 per person. The program includes announcing the Ada business of the year. More details on the February dinner are coming on The Icon.
