Catherine Freed Award recipient named

Kayla Hummell of Hilliard has received the 2017 Catherine Freed Outstanding Senior Female Leadership and Service Award from ONU. Hummell graduated from ONU this spring with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in applied mathematics.

During her college career, Hummell held offices in several campus organizations. Hummell was vice president of the Phi Sigma Rho sorority, vice president and service chair of Leaders’ Council, secretary of the Kappa Mu Epsilon math honorary, and secretary of Technology Advancement for Student Senate. She also was active in President’s Club, the College of Engineering Dean’s Team, Habitat for Humanity and the Society of Women Engineers.

She was a member of several honor societies, including Mortar Board, the Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma academic honorary societies, the Tau Beta Pi engineering honorary society, and the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honorary.

She has accepted a position as a technical problem solver for Epic Systems in Madison, Wis., which she will begin in July.

The award is named for the late Catherine Freed, the former first lady of ONU who led a life of service to others. The annual award recognizes a fourth- or fifth-year woman who has shown extraordinary leadership and service throughout her time at Ohio Northern.
