Ada's Sumner finishes 7th at state

Finished his Bulldog career with a program-record 151 total wins

COLUMBUS - Ada senior Chase Sumner won his final match Saturday morning to finish seventh in the 145 lbs. bracket of the 81st annual state wrestling Div. III meet at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the Ohio State University campus.

Sumner went 3-2 at the three-day competition to end his season 35-5. He finished his Bulldog career with a program-record 151 total wins.

On Saturday, Sumner defeated senior Henry Danishek (40-8) of Dayton Christian in the seventh-place match at 3:59 to conclude his campaign on a high note.

In the quarterfinals Friday morning Sumner lost a decision to senior Conan Becker of Galion Northmor, 8-5. Becker improved to 52-2 with the win and later advanced to the 145 lbs. title match Saturday.

The defeat dropped Sumner into the consolation bracket of the double-elimination event.

In the second consolation round later on Friday, Sumner stayed alive by beating senior Austin Eick of Rossford at 5:57 in a sudden victory overtime decision.

Sumner reached his pre-season goal of 150 career wins with the victory over Eick.

Sumner then squared off against Gibsonville senior Hugo Villareal (45-5) in the consolation quarterfinals Friday night. Villareal pulled out a hard-fought bout to advance to the consolation semis with a 4-2 decision.

The loss relegated Sumner to the seventh-place bout Saturday.

In the first round Thursday afternoon, Sumner decisioned senior Nate Vasquez of Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic, 4-3.

Sumner ended up all-state in football as a receiver and as a wrestler.
