Touch, but don't eat

Mushroom poisoning only comes from eating the flesh of the mushroom not from handling it.

By Monty Siekerman
Drew Mowery, 2, sits among a display of large mushrooms in the 200 block of West North Avenue last week (they have since been mowed down).

He's the son of Eric and Jessica Mowery. Wanting to know more about the mushrooms, the Ada Icon turned to Curtis Young, Ph.D., who lives not far away.

He has seen the mushrooms pop up in the yard for many years and could readily identify the variety and tell us something about it. In fact, they also grow in his yard.

He is Extension Educator for Van Wert County.

Teaching Ada youth to swim for 49 years

By Monty Siekerman
Sandy Neely began teaching Red Cross swim lessons at the Ada pool on Monday...for the 49th year.

Yes, some of her 75 students this year are third generation children that Sandy has taught. She said she told the village that next year would be her last as instructor, so the village should begin searching for a Red Cross certified instructor.

The summer of  2018 will be her 50th year, that's one reason why she has been named Citizen of the Year in Ada in 2015.

She is passionate about youth learning to swim.

15th annual Young's Ice Cream Charity Bike Tour at ONU

Ohio Northern was once again the destination for about 300 riders participating in the 15th annual Young's Ice Cream Charity Bike Tour.  The tour has raised more than $1 million during the past 14 years for various charities.

The two-day event began Saturday morning in Yellow Springs with an overnight at ONU's Affinity Village, then a return ride to Yellow Springs set for Sunday.  The round trip is 165 miles--good exercise for a good purpose.

The Ada VFW Post 9381 third annual car show Saturday brought out many people displaying their vehicles,

Here are some of the cars on display.

• Kevin  Mierzejewski and daughter Angela, 1968 Chevy Impala Super Sport with only 61,000 original miles. You can find Kevin just about anywhere...on land, in the air, and on the sea. Besides having this Impala, he owns the Ada Airport, loves to fly ultralights, and has a boat, as well.
