ONU sports round up

Here’s a round up of ONU sports from last week.

Men’s soccer
The No. 19 Ohio Northern men's soccer team came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision against No. 13/22 John Carroll Saturday night. The loss drops the Polar Bears to 11-4-1 overall and 3-2-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

The Blue Streaks (11-2-2 overall, 4-0-1 OAC) logged the game's lone goal during the 66th minute. Chase Fernkorn scored off a corner kick from William Turrittin.

Both clubs finished the game with six shots — all six for Northern were by six different players. The Polar Bears had two of its six shots on frame, while four of John Carroll's six shots were on target.

ONU sophomore goaltender John Lombardo (Solon) registered three saves, and JCU goalie Connor Robinson recorded two saves.

The Polar Bears will look to right the ship Wednesday at Heidelberg.

Women’s soccer
The No. 23-ranked Ohio Northern women's soccer team withstood a late charge to post a 2-1 victory at John Carroll on Saturday evening at Don Shula Stadium.

The Polar Bears (11-2-2 overall) run their winning streak to seven matches and stay on top of the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 5-0-0 record.

The Blue Streaks fall to 7-5-2, 3-2-0.

Junior Jenna Fuller (Countryside, Ill./Lyons Township) scored with 13 minutes left in the first half, off a fantastic feed from sophomore Emma Barney (Oak Harbor).

Barney carried the ball deep into JCU territory, creating a 2-on-1 rush. She fed Fuller on her left, who beat the keeper far post from 10 yards out to get the Polar Bears on the board.

Senior Rose Nienaber (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) gave ONU a 2-0 lead just 5:56 into the second half on a blast from outside the box off an assist from Fuller.

John Carroll pulled within 2-1 with a goal off a corner kick in the 64th minute.

JCU kept the pressure on for the next 20 minutes or so, but the Polar Bear defense held firm and Northern controlled the final six minutes to close out the match.

ONU out-shot JCU 14-7 and enjoyed a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

"This was a good win for us," ONU head coach Mark Batman said. "A good win on the road against a solid team. We had some chances early in the match that could have given us some breathing room, but we handled their late pressure well and finished the game strong."

Senior Meagan Grierson (Dayton/Miamisburg) had three saves in goal, including a key save in the 84th minute, to record the victory for Ohio Northern.

The Polar Bears will return to action Wednesday evening with a 7 pm home match against Heidelberg at Kerscher Stadium.

Men’s golf
The Ohio Northern men's golf team wrapped up its Fall season with a second place finish at the 36-hole Defiance Fall Invitational on Saturday at Ironwood Golf Course.

The Polar Bears (15-15 overall) finished with a 611 to finish second in the three-team field.

Wayne State (Mich.) won with an even-par 576 and Siena Heights (Mich.) was third with a 629. Defiance had no team score.

Sophomore Nolan Kimberly (Zanesville) and freshman Alex Cabungcal (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) tied for fifth of 22 golfers with 145s to lead Ohio Northern.

Junior Andrew Slusher (Covington) as ninth with a 154 and freshman Josh Steyer (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) tied for 13th with a 159.

Wayne State finished 1-4 individually, with Keaton Inglis winning Medalist honors with a 142.

The Polar Bears will return to action with their annual spring break trip in March.

Men’s Cross country
Junior Travis Sutter (Fort Recovery) and sophomore Patrick Baker (Massillon/Jackson) led the Ohio Northern men's cross country team to 17th of 39 teams in the Oberlin Rumble Saturday, held at the Oberlin College cross country course.

Ohio Northern (66-41 overall) scored 527 points while Berea scored 75 points to win the race and Otterbein scored 109 points for second place.

Sutter crossed in 25:58.2 for 68th place out of 339 finishers and Baker was close behind in a career-best 26:01.5 for 78th.

Junior Jordan Green (Wooster) was next for ONU, placing 113rd in 26:25.5.

Freshman Billy Driemeyer (House Springs, Mo./Lindbergh) was 126th in a career-best 26:31.8 and junior Sam Krabacher (Hamilton/Badin) rounded out the Northern scorers by finishing 168th in 26:56.0.

ONU's displacers were junior Dylan McKean (Warren/Champion) and junior Alessandro Tramontano(Cleveland/Mayfield).

McKean was 181st in 27:01.5 and Tramontano was 212th in 27:22.6.

The Polar Bears return to the course on Nov. 2 for the OAC Championships in University Heights. The race is set for 11 a.m.

Women’s cross country
The Ohio Northern women's cross country team finished ninth of 32 teams at the Oberlin Rumble on Saturday morning.

The Polar Bears (67-26 overall) finished with 295 points.

No. 10-ranked Oberlin won the meet with 104 points, Bates (Mass.) was second with 112, No. 21 John Carroll was third with 142, No. 33 Washington & Lee (Pa.) was fourth with 145 and No. 19 Baldwin Wallace was fifth with 177 points.

Sophomore Tessa Pitcovich (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) led ONU with a 26th place finish out of 283 runners in 22:25 on the 6,000-meter course.

Sophomore Rue Whitmore (Mason) was 42nd in 22:52, senior Kathleen Colvin (Hilliard/Bishop Ready) was 58th in 23:02, junior Megan Wright (Eaton/Twin Valley South) was 77th in 23:14 and junior Chyanne Retcher(Ney/Fairview) was 95th in 23:24.

Evie Bultmeyer of Trine (Ind.) won the race in 21:01.

The Polar Bears return to Nov. 2 at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships at John Carroll.

Volleyball
The No. 11-ranked Ohio Northern volleyball team defeated John Carroll 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 25-14 on Friday evening inside the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears (20-4 overall, 5-0 OAC) were led by 16 kills by senior All-American Chelsea Huppert (Bremen, Ind.) and 12 kills by senior Sydney Bapst (Grove City).

Senior McKenna Hostetler (Plain City/Alder) led the backline with 28 digs while freshman Madison Kern(Loveland/Mount Notre Dame) added 10 kills on a .529 hitting percentage.

Northern controlled the first set, winning 25-18.

ONU trailed 11-5 in the second set before going on a 9-1 run to lead 14-12.

A kill by junior Katie Wade (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) on a set from senior Kristin Langston (Versailles) put ONU up 21-15. An attacking error by JCU clinched the second set at 25-19.

ONU dropped the third set 23-25 prior to pulling away in the fourth set to win 25-14.

The Polar Bears notched 56 kills on 184 swings with 15 errors (.223 hitting percentage) while the Blue Streaks posted 54 kills on 173 swings with 28 errors (.150 hitting percentage).

Ohio Northern will battle Heidelberg (4-1 OAC) in Tiffin on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
