ONU women clinch first-ever OAC lacrosse tourney bid

Here's an update on ONU lacrosse.

Ohio Northern clinched its first-ever Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament bid with a 15-7 victory over Baldwin Wallace on a snowy, chilly Wednesday night at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

The Polar Bears finished their regular season with a 7-9 overall record (7-9 OAC) and will finish fifth in the 9-team OAC.

Northern will likely be either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in next week's OAC Tournament and will play a First Round game on Tuesday.

The tournament pairings will be released by the league on Saturday night after regular season play concludes.

The Yellow Jackets fall to 2-11, 2-11.

Senior Annie McArn (Bay Village/Western Reserve Academy) scored a season-high five goals, had two assists and tied her career high with seven points to lead Ohio Northern.

Freshman Emma Perry (Pickerington/North) tied her career high with four goals and had a career-high five assists for ONU.

ONU scored the first seven goals of the second half, holding BW scoreless for nearly 20 minutes, to turn a 5-5 tie into a commanding 12-5 lead with 16:12 to play.

Baldwin Wallace finally got on the board with 10:12 left in the game to make it 12-6, but ONU would score the next three goals to push the lead to 15-6 with 1:00 remaining.

Ohio Northern outshot BW 31-17 and won the ground ball battle 31-26.

The Polar Bears are idle this weekend and will compete in the OAC Tournament First Round on Tuesday. Check back to ONUSports.com for more details on the site, opponent and time as they become available.

MEN'S TEAM

The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team rallied from a 9-3 deficit, but ultimately fell 9-7 in a non-conference game at Baldwin Wallace on a snowy Wednesday night in Finnie Stadium.

With the loss, the ONU falls to 5-5 overall and BW improves to 10-1.

The Polar Bears had seven goals on the night scored by seven different players.

The Yellow Jackets' Gunnar McMillan led all scorers with four goals. 

Baldwin Wallace carried a 9-3 lead until senior Josh Foster (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) scored a goal with 1:53 remaining in the third quarter.

ONU scored two more goals by junior Ben Gawronski (Dublin/Scioto) and senior Pat Berthelsen-Leon(Bethpage, N.Y.) in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter to trail 9-6 with 9:00 remaining in the game.

Northern got a goal by senior Mason Schmelling (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) with 1:40 left in the game to get within 9-7.

ONU won the ensuing faceoff and had four shots in the final 1:12, but could not get the equalizer.

BW scored five of the first six goals to take a 5-1 lead with 1:53 to go in the first quarter.

Northern out-shot Baldwin Wallace 41-31. Both teams recorded 33 ground balls.

Ohio Northern will return to action Saturday afternoon in a 1 pm Ohio Athletic Conference contest at Wilmington.
