ONU women's spring sports update

Here's a summary of recent ONU women's spring sports.

VOLLEYBALL
Ohio Northern junior Hannah Irmer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Volleyball Libero of the Year, joining senior Hope Williamson (Noblesville, Ind./Herirtage Christian) and junior Melina Woods (Ada) on the 2020 All-Conference Volleyball team in voting conducted by the leagues 10 head coaches.

Irmer was also a First Team All-Conference selection. Woods was a Second Team pick and Williamson was named Honorable Mention All-OAC.

Irmer is fifth in the OAC with a team-high 302 digs and is fourth with an average of 4.87 digs per set.

In three seasons, she has 893 career digs in 76 matches.

Woods, an outside hitter, is fourth in the league with a .326 hitting percentage and led the team with 187 kills and 44 blocks in her first season as a Polar Bear after transferring from Canisius.

Williamson hit .260 as a middle hitter and finished with 114 kills and 26 blocks this season.

In four seasons at ONU, Williamson has 210 kills and 57 blocks in 55 career matches.

The Polar Bears went 13-3 and finished third in the OAC in 2020-21 under first-year head coach Katie Kuhn.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior Hope Williamson (Noblesville, Ind./Herirtage Christian) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for the week of April 6-12.

She hit .385 with 25 kills and 12 blocks as ONU split a pair of 5-set matches at Otterbein last Tuesday.

This season Williamson hit .260 with 114 kills and 26 blocks in 16 matches as the Polar Bears finished third in the OAC with a 13-3 record.

This marks the third time this season that an ONU player was named the OAC Player of the Week.

SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior Kristy Catrine (Springboro) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of April 13.

This marks the third time this season that Catrine has received the honor, as she won the award on March 16 and 23.

Catrine had 10-save shutout as ONU tied at Otterbein 0-0 in a battle of league unbeatens on Thursday. On Sunday, she had one save as Northern clinched the OAC Regular Season title with a 3-0 win at Mount Union.

Catrine has not allowed a goal in her career and extended her school record scoreless streak to 813 minutes this season and 816 minutes in her career.

The Polar Bears will return to action Thursday with a 7 pm contest at home a semifinal match of the OAC Tournament at Kerscher Stadium.
 

GOLF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Freshman Grace Honigford (West Chester/Lakota East) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Golf Player of the Week for the week of April 6-12.

She was Medalist in both of her tournaments this weekend, winning the Heidelberg Invitational and the Otterbein Cardinal Classic.

At Heidelberg, Honigford was first out of 25 golfers with an 82 on the par-72, 5921-yard course.

She was then was first out of 27 golfers with a 119 on Sunday at Otterbein to earn Medalist honors for the fourth time in nine tournaments this season.

This marks the third time this season that an ONU player has received the award.

The Polar Bears will return to action at Otterbein this Saturday and Sunday.

LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Freshman Sydney Kilgore (Pleasant Plain/Little Miami) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week for the week of April 5-11.

Kilgore had a record-setting week, netting 11 goals in two matches.

Kilgore tied the school record of eight goals set by Maddie Storr in the program's inaugural season against Urbana in 2016 in a 23-9 victory at Heidelberg on Wednesday.

She also set a school record with two man-down goals, scoring them just four minutes apart as ONU led 8-4 midway through the first half.

Kilgore also broke the school's single-season scoring record with 69 points and 20 assists this season.

She is second in the OAC and is fourth nationally with 49 goals this season. She also needs just four more goals to tie Storr's single season goals record of 53.

This marks the second time this season that Kilgore has won the award.

The Polar Bears (5-8 overall, 5-8 OAC) will return to action Wednesday when they host Capital at 7 pm at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

SOFTBALL
The Ohio Northern softball team scored 16 runs and pounded out 23 base hits in a 6-4, 10-0 double header sweep of Heidelberg on Sunday morning at the ONU Softball Field.

The Polar Bears improve to 11-10-1 overall and are 10-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Student Princes fall to 10-12-1, 9-11.

ONU salvaged a split of the 4-game series after HU won both games in Tiffin on Saturday 4-3 and 6-4.

Junior Rachel Hish (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) went 4-for-6 with a triple and three runs scored to lead the ONU offense.

In the opener, senior Abby Davis (New Palestine, Ind.) and sophomore Annika Murray (Hilliard/Bradley) had back-to-back RBI infield singles in the fifth as ONU rallied from a 4-3 deficit to lead 5-4.

Senior Gabby Stewart (Union, Ky./St. Henry) singled home to score junior Hannah Rubel (Swanton/Notre Dame) with an insurance run in the sixth.

In the nightcap, freshman Alex Daum (Wapakoneta) threw a 2-hit shutout, striking out one, in five innings as the game was called due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.

Stewart, junior Abby Elliott (Loveland/Ursuline) and Murray all had three hits on the day.

The Polar Bears will return to action next weekend with a 4-game series with Wilmington. ONU will host the Quakers for two games on Saturday and will play twice at Wilmington on Sunday.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
The Ohio Northern women's tennis team improved to 5-0 on the season with an 8-1 victory over Mount Union on Sunday afternoon at the Westwood Tennis and Fitness Center.

The match was considered a non-conference contest as the two teams are scheduled to meet again at Mount Union on April 24. The two schools agreed to retroactively make it a league match if either team cannot play on the 24th due to COVID-19 protocols.

Sophomore Regan Landis (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) led the Polar Bears with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and an 8-0 win with senior Katie Curry (Oxford/Talawanda) at No. 1 doubles.

Northern swept the doubles courts as junior Ola Latala (Grosse Isle, Mich.) and freshman Olivia Kesner(Lima/Central Catholic) won at 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and senior Mackenzie Wills (Ada) and sophomore Jeorgia Templin (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.

ONU then won five of the six singles courts, led by Landis at No. 2.

Kesner won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3, Curry won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, Wills won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and senior Jordan Dodson(Worthington) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Polar Bears will return to action Wednesday at home against Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference match.

TRACK AND FIELD
The Ohio Northern women's outdoor track and field team finished third of five teams at the Heidelberg Tyson Invitational on Saturday at Hoernemann Stadium.

The Polar Bears (14-6 overall) finished with 107 points.

Freshman Alexis Starner (Wellington) led ONU with a victory in the 200-meter dash in :27.38 and a second place finish in the 100 in :13.03.

Junior Kayla Silva (Westerville/South) won the 100 in :12.34.

Freshmen J.J. Herron (Miamisburg) and Hope Stanley (Geneva) also won events.

Herron won the 400 in 1:01.04 and Stanley won the javelin with a toss of 31.92 meters.

Baldwin Wallace won the team title with 153 points, Wilmington was second with 111.5 points, Marietta was fourth with 106 points and Heidelberg was fifth with 26.5 points.

The Polar Bears will return to action next Saturday when they host the Mike Becraft Invitational at Kerscher Stadium.
