Varsity Singers give a "Coffee Break"

Public performance Thursday at 6 p.m. in the school auditorium

Following a week-long camp, Ada High School’s Varsity Singers will give a free public performance on Thursday.

The performance is at 6 p.m., Thursday, July 25, in the school auditorium, as a preview of the upcoming show choir season, according to Scott Henning, director.

The show’s title is “Coffee Break.” It takes place in the Varsity Singer's Cafe where hard work and coffee keep the world going.

This year’s Singers include 29 singers and dancers, 12 band members and a four-person crew.

Meet Janet Fisher - in the Vancrest resident spotlight

Janet Fisher, a life-long Ada resident, is this month's Vancrest resident spotlight.

She grew up in Ada and graduated from Ada High School. She worked at Hal and Jean's restaurant for many years, saying that she took the job because a teacher told her that it would "break her shyness."

She enjoyed bowling and now her favorite game is balloon volleyball. Janet is a long-term care resident of Vancrest.

Summer Sounds Choral Camp

Singing, dancing, making drums, playing instruments and building new friendships

Mother of 6th and 8th graders: “Our boys loved the week of choral camp!”

Eleven singers, grades 1 to 8, joined Noteworthy Community Choir’s first-ever Summer Sounds Choral Camp, and spent the week singing, dancing, making drums, playing instruments and building new friendships.

“We didn’t know the vocal skills of the campers until day one, and they were wonderful singers!  We even managed a three-part song!”  says, Vicki Mills, director of SSCC.  

“Year one was a fantastic success, and we’re already looking forward to year two. I even heard a camper tell his mom he wanted to come to this camp again next year!”

If the New Mexico landscape was an inspiration to artist Georgia O’Keeffe in the 1920s, decades later it may have also been a visual training ground for Ada photographer Karen Ward.

Arriving in Ada nearly 30 years ago from Las Cruces, New Mexico, Ward fell in love with “the charm of the yesteryear vintage of this small village.”  She’s been photographing Ada ever since.

Ward has created a collection of postcards featuring Ada’s historic landmarks and unique perspectives of everyday scenes. 

New PASS executive director has Ada connection

Serving area communities through the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Allen, Auglaize and Hardin counties

Rick Skilliter, husband of Meri Skilliter, Ada school superintendent, became executive director of PASS (Prevention Awareness Support Services), a non-profit organization serving Allen, Auglaize, and Hardin Counties. The appointment was made on July 1.

PASS serves area communities through the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Allen, Auglaize and Hardin counties.

PASS is expanding its footprint in Ohio as a certified prevention agency. According to a PASS news release, the addition of Skilliter allows for continuity of programming during that expansion.

ONU student among 8 Ohio law students in rural summer initiative

Working in Zanesville with an 11-attorney firm

FROM THE ONU PETTIT COLLEGE OF LAW FACEBOOK - Maggie Kimmel, L-3, was one of eight Ohio law students chosen by the Ohio State Bar Association to participate in the new Rural Summer Clerkship Initiative.

Through the program, she is working in Zanesville at Gottlieb, Johnston, Beam, and Dal Ponte, PLL.

“There are eleven attorneys who work at this general-practice firm and each one has a different focus,” she said. “I am loving the opportunity to dabble in all areas of the law so I can figure out what area I would like to focus on for my own practice after graduation.”
