Ada spikers downed by St. Henry

ADA - The Ada volleyball team lost in three straight close sets to visiting power St. Henry Monday evening in a non-league bout between regional powers.

 

The Bulldogs (2-1) fell to the hard-hitting Redskins 25-13, 25-20, 25-21. SH improved to 3-1 with the victory.

 

Ada led 10-6 in set two and by 16-14 in the third game before losing both contests to late Redskin closing runs of 11-4 and 11-5, respectively.

 

Senior Melina Woods led Ada with 16 kills and 17 digs, but SH had too many weapons for the Bulldogs to contend with.

Women's tennis opens Sept. 6; 17th season with Scott Wills as coach

The Ohio Northern women's tennis team will open the fall portion of its 2017-18 schedule under 17th-year head coach Scott Wills on Sept. 6 with a tri-match at Defiance with Concordia (Mich.)

Northern will also compete at the Kenyon Invitational and the ITA Regional Championships at Oberlin.

The Kenyon Invitational will include one of the strongest fields in the country for Fall competition. 

ONU will hit the courts against nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon (Pa.), Kenyon, Case Western Reserve, Denison and Oberlin in addition to host of regionally ranked foes.

The Polar Bears finished the 2016-17 season 22-5 overall and 7-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Lady Bulldogs win soccer opener

INDIAN LAKE - The Ada girls soccer team beat Indian Lake 4-2 in their season opener Saturday to highlight the debut of new head coach Doug Poling.

 

The Lady Bulldogs start out the season 1-0 after Bella East scored three goals to pace the offense.

 

Katie Butterfield tallied the other Ada goal.

 

East, Butterfield and Ella Poling each passed out one assist. Senior Anney Archer made 12 saves in her first game in goal.

 

Ada fell behind 1-0 but was able to tie it up before halftime. They then outscored the Lakers 3-1 after the intermission.

 

Lady Bulldog spikers start off with sweep

ADA - The Ada volleyball team beat local non-league foes Cory-Rawson and Waynesfield-Goshen convincingly on Saturday to open the promising 2017 season on a strong note.

 

The Bulldogs (2-0) dismissed the Hornets and Tigers in straight sets. Meanwhile, Cory defeated Waynesfield in the middle match.

 

The Bulldogs had a little more trouble with C-R, winning 25-14, 25-16 in the opener.

 

Senior Melina Woods paced Ada with 14 kills, three digs and three blocks vs. C-R. Senior Maddie Gossard served three aces and dished out nine assists. Sophomore Sidney Gossard doled out seven assists and added one ace.

 

Men's tennis to open at the Oberlin Invitational

The Ohio Northern men's tennis team will open its 2017-18 schedule on Sept 16-17 at the Oberlin Invitational under second-year head coach Mike Bonnell.

The Polar Bears will also play at the ITA Regionals at Kalamazoo on Sept. 29-Oct. 1 to wrap up their fall schedule.

Northern will begin its spring schedule Feb. 10 with a tri-match at Albion (Mich.) with Olivet (Mich.)

ONU will open the home portion of its schedule on Feb. 25 against Adrian (Mich.) and will open Ohio Athletic Conference play at Capital on March 30.
