Two school records fall

Senior Emily Richards (Delaware/Hayes) and sophomore Taylor Lavey (New Baltimore, Mich./Findlay) each set new school records to highlight ONU's day at the Silverton Invitational.

Richards bested her own school record in the 1-mile run and finished second overall in the event in 4:46.11. Her time is the sixth fastest time in Div. III history in the event, and currently leads the nation among Div. III athletes.

The senior now owns the best time in the country in the 800-meter run, the 1-mile run and the 3,000-meter run.

Lavey also broke the 200-meter dash school record, finishing 16th overall in the Div. I-dominated field in a school-record :26.07. Junior Taylor Fisher (Wapakoneta) also competed in the 200-meter dash, and ran a career-best time of :27.42 in the event.

In the 800-meter run, junior Avery Ewing (Kokomo, Ind./Eastern) ran a career-best time of 2:17.29 and posted a top-10 finish, placing eighth overall.

Northern saw two athletes compete in the pole as junior Maddy Reed (Piketon) finished second overall in the event and was the top collegiate athlete with a vault of 12' 7.50" and sophomore Maggie Krause (Chagrin Falls/Kenston)

Richards, Lavey and Fisher would also team up with Ewing to compete in the 4x400-meter relay, winning the race in a season-best 3:59.46.

Freshman Stella DeWitt (Weston/Cardinal Stritch Catholic) also competed for the Polar Bears at the Silverston Invitational, finishing third in the long jump with a leap of 17' 4.25" and posted a personal-best time of 9.99 in the 60-meter hurdles.

"This was a pretty big atmosphere for us," said head coach Jason Maus. "We aren't really used to looking over and seeing a Big Ten uniform in the lane beside us but I really think we handeled ourselves well. Once we got into the meet and got comfortable I felt like we took care of business. Emily was a little under the weather and still had a great day. Lavey had a great 200 race and smashed the school record. Maddy and Maggie both had good days in the pole vault Avery PR'd in the 800. Stella handled herself well being a freshman on this big stage and I'm proud of the way we looked today."

Northern also competed in Findlay as junior Tia Harris (Newton Falls) led the way in the weight throw with a toss of 42' 6.25".

The Polar Bears return to action tomorrow afternoon as they compete in the Kenyon Classic in Gambier.
