ONU course studies the history and influence of banned books

Classic, contested books such as Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Fahrenheit 451 are being analyzed this semester by Ohio Northern University honors students. The course is focusing on how and why such works have been challenged or banned in the U.S. and England, their literary value, and how they reflect and influence civics and politics.

“We will quickly discover that virtually every book that is considered a classic now was once (or still is) banned. (This is a paradox that we will have to negotiate together),” explains Douglas Dowland, Ph.D., associate professor of English, in the course syllabus. “We will also discover that books which address contemporary issues are as frequently challenged as classic texts, which will lead us to consider how literature continues to be a source of personal discovery with political ramifications.”

February 9 Star Party: "The Winter Milky Way"

ONU and surrounding communities are invited to the ONU Observatory
this on Friday, February 9 for a stargazing event called "The Winter Milky Way."

Organizers note, "The Milky Way is our home Galaxy. It appears as a swath of light that wraps around the sky.  In the summer, the Milky Way runs through constellations like Cygnus (the Swan), while in the winter, it runs through Gemini and Canis Major (the great dog) next to Orion. In February, this "Winter Milky Way" is crossing the meridian around 9:30 pm, making it a good time to explore its treasures with a telescope.

"These include Hubble's Variable Nebula, the Seagull Nebula, and several star clusters.

Income tax filing assistance offered by ONU's VITA program

Ohio Northern University’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is again offering free income tax preparation for community members who make about $70,000 or less annually.

In turn, this service enables ONU’s Dicke College of Business Administration students to receive practical training with tax preparation software and interpersonal communication, and to become IRS-certified to help prepare basic and intermediate tax returns. Students also gain experience in identifying and helping clients claim special credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly, which can significantly influence filing outcomes.

Services include offering general filing guidance, completing tax returns for individuals, and e-filing those returns with the IRS.
