English professor’s work to appear in ‘Best New Poets 2012’

 

“As a Debutante I Adjusted My Hatpin,” a poem by Dr. Jennifer Moore, Ohio Northern University assistant professor of creative writing, has been selected to appear in “Best New Poets 2012,” which will be published this November.

“Best New Poets” is published annually by the University of Virginia Press to highlight the work of emerging poets. It is sponsored by Meridian, the University of Virginia’s literary magazine.

Amanda Fincher on her way to medical school in Turkey

In May 2011 Amanda Fincher received her Ada High School diploma. Her hopes were set a medical career in dentistry.

Sixteen months after high school, as she puts it, “my life turned upside down,” as she learned late last week that she was accepted into medical school in Turkey.

This weekend she is on her way to Turkey, where she will enroll as one of 25 students accepted into the English medicine program at Yildirim Beyazit University in Ankara.

Nils Riess to chair judging committee at 2012 Estonian Theater Festival

 

Nils Riess, Ohio Northern University professor of communications arts, director of media communication services and performing arts, and chair of the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts, will serve as chairman of the international judging committee at the 2012 Estonian Theater Drama and Baltic Theatre Festival in Tartu, Estonia, beginning Sept. 3.

“It is an honor to be recognized and selected to judge in my homeland. It gives me an opportunity to engage with other theatre dignitaries from other countries, view works being done in Europe and, hopefully, bring some of my experiences back to ONU,” Riess said.

Ada Kiwanis will install new officers on Sept. 25

Harold Friesner called the 44th meeting (Sept. 4th) of the 2011–2012 Kiwanis Year to order at 12:03 p.m.

The invocation was offered by Jon Umphress.

Ada Kiwanis hears update on Saturday Morning Art Enrichment program

Harold Friesner called the 43th meeting (Aug. 28th) of the 2011–2012 Kiwanis Year to order at 12:00 noon.

Jon Umphress offered the Invocation by Jon Umphress.

The following guests were introduced; Dr. Linda Lehman, Deb Gallagher, Alexis Hinton, Kayla Reiff and Dani Henderson, faculty and students from the Getty College of Liberal Arts education department.

The wedding anniversaries of Mark and Julie Shull (August 29, 1960 and Dustin and Jennifer Brooks (August 30, 2005) were noted.

Kassandra Chiles, Luke Amstutz tie in Icon football week 2 contest

There was a five-way tie for first place in this week's Icon Football Contest. Jim Dillman, Kassandra Chiles, Luke Amstutz, Marc Shaner and Roger Steffan all correctly picked 13 of 15 games. 

Jim and Roger were eliminated by the first tie-breaker by picking Bluffton to win.  Marc was eliminated by the second tie-breaker by picking Ada to win by 1-7 points. That leaves two tied.

Kassandra Chiles and Luke Amstutz both picked 13 games correctly and had the same two tie-breakers.
