United Way fundraiser heats up

Due to unavoidable circumstances, United Way of Hardin County had a slow start to its 2022 fundraising campaign. However, due to the generosity of local individuals and businesses, the campaign is heating up and has reached half of its $170,000. Newly appointed director Sean Beck, pictured here, reminds us that donations are still welcome and can be made HERE.

Save the Date: Jan. 7 AHS Alumni Hall of Honor reception

Mark you calendars: from 5:00-6:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2023, the Ada High School Alumni Association will host a reception for the newest hall of honor inductee Greg Grimslid, 2022 scholarship recipient Kirsten Poling, and all Ada Alumni. The reception takes place immediately prior to the Ada High School boys basketball game versus Upper Scioto Valley.

The practice of holding a hall of honor banquet had lapsed, giving new assistant principal Britton Devier the opportunity to reintroduce and update a 25-year tradition.

The 2022 Hall of Honor Inductee is Greg Grimslid of Grimslid & Hood attorneys and Hardin Co. municipal judge. Hood serves as Ada’s junior high football coach and high school assistant track coach, roles he has filled for 40 years or more.

The 2022 scholarship recipient is Kirsten Poling, an Ada student who attends Ohio State University.

AHS boys blasted by Bluffton 3's

Plagued by illness, the host Ada High School boys basketball team fell victim to a three-point onslaught as defending league champion Bluffton rolled to a 92-45 victory in Northwest Conference action Friday night, December 16.

Red-hot Bluffton fired in nine first half three-point goals, and ended up hitting a dozen treys. Senior guard Carson Soper drained four triples and added a conventional three-point play in the first half as he tallied 21 points in the first 16 minutes.

Apollo board of education meets December 19

On Monday, December 19, the Apollo Career Center Board of Education will meet at 7:00 p.m. for a regular meeting.

The agenda includes a resolution honoring Brad Fruchey of Bluffton for 15 years of service.

Among “new and recommended matters” the board will vote on 

- Hiring substitute teachers Karen Follrod and Alexis Nagel, supplemental contracts for craft shows to Hailey Diana and Courtney Meyers, and hiring teaching assistant Timothy Alger.

- Purchasing a Lucina Patient Simulator, cost $86.8K.

Weekend Doctor: Ostomy care

An ostomy is a surgically created opening in the abdomen for the discharge of body waste. The United Ostomy Association of America (UOAA) notes the term “stoma” is used interchangeably, which refers to the actual end of the ureter, small or large bowel that can be seen protruding through the abdominal wall. An ostomy could include a colostomy (connecting the colon to the outside of the body), ileostomy (connecting the small intestine) or a urostomy (a general term for a surgical procedure that diverts urine away from a diseased or defective bladder).

Icon holiday schedule

The Bluffton Icon and Ada Icon will take an extended holiday break for Christmas and New Year’s. Except for breaking news, which may include sports, the Icon staff will be taking a holiday from December 23-26 and from December 30-January 2.
