All-American Kyle Kwiat named OAC wrestler of the week

By Tim Glon

Ohio Northern senior All-American Kyle Kwiat was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Jan. 7-13.

Kwiat, the defending national champion and No. 1-ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, became ONU's all-time career wins leader with a 6-0 record at the Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming (Pa.) College over the weekend.

He had a pin, four tech falls and a major decision and is now 22-3 on the season.

Kwiat is now 135-16 in his four seasons at Ohio Northern, surpassing the previous record of 133 wins by previous national champions Vinny Cameron (1986-89) and Luke Miller (2008-11).

He is the fourth ONU wrestler to win the award this season, as junior Michael Pawlitz was named Jan. 7 and Dec. 10 and junior Jerry Pasquale was named on Dec. 17.

The Polar Bears (12-1 overall) will begin OAC action on Tuesday when they host Muskingum in a 7:30 pm dual at the ONU Sports Center.
