You'll never guess where Ada gets some of the salt on the street in front of your house

There is probably a little bit of Morocco on the road in front of your house as a portion of the salt being spread in Ohio this winter comes from that African nation.

But, no matter where the salt comes from, it's good news that Ada should have an ample supply to spread on roads this winter.

Last winter's big snows and extreme cold caused a shortage of salt in Ohio this year. Ada purchased some of its salt early last year before prices more than tripled.

During a typical year like this one, Ada spreads about 120 tons of road salt and 1 ton of calcium chloride, which is used on sidewalks and near vegetation since it is less damaging. About 20 tons of grit (what most people refer to as sand) is also dispersed. Overall, the road clearing materials cost about $8,000 during a typical winter.

Ada Village Administrator Jim Meyer and the street crew were in for kudos at the last council meeting when Mayor Dave Retterer said, "They have the rules of engagement, they make deliberate decisions, they study the situation, and they do what they think is best."
