ONU is the place for multiple academic, athletic, music camps during summer 2016

Ohio Northern University will host a multitude of camps during summer 2016, each devoted to academics, music or athletics.

ONU will host its 12th Summer Academic and Honors Institute for gifted high school students in three sessions: June 12-17, June 19-24 and July 17-22. This year’s institute includes 21 weeklong academic camps that provide great ways to investigate potential career choices or college majors.

Camps will be offered in the following subjects: art and design, astronomy and physics, biochemistry and biotechnology, chemistry, cryptography, engineering, forensic science (both basic and advanced), human anatomy and histology, international relations, mock trial, nutrition, pharmacy, philosophy and technology, physics, public health, social media, sport science, technology, theatre and videography.

Camp GEMS (girls in engineering, math and science) will take place July 10-13. Camp GEMS is an engineering, mathematics and science camp designed to develop interest, excitement and self-confidence in young women entering grades seven or eight in the fall 2016.

The camp also offers many all-camp activities such as a movie night, swimming and tennis; all sleeping, eating and camp activities take place on ONU’s campus.

ONU’s U.S.-Japan Summer Camp is scheduled for July 17-30 and is open to American students entering their freshman through senior years of high school in fall 2016.

This camp gives students the chance to learn all about the Japanese language and culture – from anime to samurai – with Japanese students in town for ONU’s Sakae Institute.

ONU’s Summer Music Camp is scheduled for June 12-17, 2016. This camp has been designed for students in grades seven through 12 and provides many performing and educational opportunities.

Campers register as vocal, band or string majors, with auditions held the first day of camp to determine chair and voice placement. Campers then have the opportunity to perform in symphonic band, symphonic choir, string orchestra, instrumental ensembles, show choir and/or jazz band, and will be exposed to music theory, music technology, conducting, dance, piano classes and jazz improvisation.

The fourth annual ONU Piano Camp is scheduled for July 25-29 and will feature the Elementary School Piano Camp and the Middle School Piano Camp running concurrently.

The elementary camp is intended for students entering first through fifth grades with at least six months of previous piano experience, while the middle school camp is intended for students entering fifth through eighth grades with at least two years of previous piano experience.

This year’s campers will explore composers who have told stories through their works. Campers will then compose a piece of their own that they will perform at the end of the week. They also will improve their solo piece during daily master classes and play in a duet or trio, all featured in a recital on Friday. Campers will participate in Dalcroze Eurhythmics sessions, which include ear-training, improvisation and movement.

Finally, the Department of Athletics will host several camps during summer 2016 dedicated to a wide range of sports: football, baseball, basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, swimming and diving, and track and field. These camps are led by ONU’s varsity coaches and players.
