ONU men's record falls at All-Ohio

Junior Lucas Shumate led the Ohio Northern men's track and field team to a third place finish with 105.5 points Saturday afternoon at the All-Ohio Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan.

The Polar Bears improve to 54-7 overall on the season.

Ohio Wesleyan won the meet with 163 points, followed by Mount Union in second with 121 points.

Shumate led the Polar Bears in the meet as he won the hammer throw with a new ONU school record distance of 187 feet 2 inches.

The junior broke the previous record of 183 feet 5 inches set by Jesse Marlow.

He also placed second in the discus throw with a pitch of 149 feet 9 inches.

Senior Christian Rupe also claimed a first place finish in the meet as he won the 100-meter dash with a season best time of 10.97.

In the 3,000 steeplechase, junior Kase Schalois finished second in a time of 9:29.24.

Sophomore Matt Molinaro finished second in the 1,500-meter run, leading three Polar Bears across the finish line in the event.

Molinaro finished with a time of 3:54.35, followed by freshman Ian McVey in fourth with a season best time of 3:58.56, senior Eric Wymer in fifth in a time of 3:59.51 and junior Andrew Harden in sixth in a time of 4:02.80.

Junior Aaren Hemmelgarn finished second in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:08.34.

In the Pole Vault, senior Brandon Ike took third clearing a height of 14 feet 6.25 inches.

Rupe teamed up with sophomore Denorris Turner, freshman Nicholas Krugh and senior Jojuan Fisher to claim a third place finish in the 4x100-meter relay in 42.36.

In the 200-meter run, Rupe finished fourth in a time of 22.07.

Sophomore Samuel Boyd finished fifth in the 3,000 steeplechase in a time of 9:48.25.

The 4x400-meter relay of sophomore Brandon Emert, sophomore Conner Karg, junior Ian Mckee and Molinaro finished fifth in 3:21.51.

Other top ten finishes included senior Dan Sowa in the 800-meter run finishing sixth with a time of 1:56.26, senior Steven Gohrband in the pole vault finishing seventh with a season best height of 14 feet .5 inches, junior Zane Augustine in the hammer claiming seventh with a season best pitch of 156 feet 2 inches, and sophomore Alexander Sibila in the high jump finishing seventh with a height of 6 feet 4 inches.

Junior Cully Gordon finished seventh in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:30.65, while junior Ian Mckee finished eighth in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:57.58.

Freshman Kody Clakins also claimed an eighth place finish in the discus throw with a distance of 137 feet 2 inches.

Turner also claimed a tenth place finish in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.64.

The Polar Bears return to action Saturday as they host the Polar Bear Invitational at Kerscher Stadium.
