What a season for Ada HS Winterguard teams

Gold and Purple teams compete next at WGI Color Guard World Championships, Dayton

Ada High School's Winterguard teams perform a season finale, open to the public, in the high school gym at 8:30 p.m., Monday, April 10.

The team completed a very successful competition season. Here is a summary of the team's performances, and a description of what each team does in its competition.

Color guard includes spinning and tossing flags, rifles or sabers, as well as elements of dance and gymnastics performed on a tarp to music within an allotted time.  Each group’s performance has a theme.

Guard performances are evaluated by a team of 5 judges, each with a specific area to critique. Based on a scale of 0-100, color guards earn scores in the areas of equipment analysis, movement analysis, design analysis, and general effects (2 judges).

Ada’s Gold Team performs in the Scholastic A class.
Their “From Moment to Memory” show includes Ada High School students Libbie Milks, Hailey Maier, Meredith Morgan, Meredith Marshall, Lindsay Crouse, Evan Smittle, and Jacob Colwell.

This past weekend the Scholastic A team earned 1st place in their class beating out 8 competitors, and earning the second highest score of the day (86.51) regardless of class, at the Ohio Indoor Performing Association (OIPA) Colorguard State Championships in Wapakoneta.

Over the season the Scholastic A guard has increased their score by 23 points in OIPA competitions. Previous OIPA competitions and the Gold Teams placement include:

• Olentangy Liberty High School 2/5/17, 4th place
• Springfield-Holland High School 2/25/17, 1st place
• Findlay High School 2/26/17, 2nd place
ª New Philadelphia High School 3/18/17, 1st place

Ada’s Purple Team performs in the Scholastic Open class.
“The Last Dance” features performers Eli Garmon, Madison Wright, Samantha Crawford, Zohie Dysert, Olivia Hiester, and Eda Tanriverdi. There are a limited number of groups reaching the Scholastic Open class as this is considered a higher level of performance.  This group earned first at all 5 OIPA competitions they attended, including the OIPA Championships, raising their score by 24 points over the competition season.

Ada’s Junior Flagline also earned 1st place at the OIPA Championship with their “Love You” performance with a score of 81.49, beating out 2 other groups. Their score improved an amazing 30 points over the season. Members of the junior flagline include Daniel Nash, Jacob Bassitt, Leona Dalton, Kaylee Huffer and Mitchel Frazier.

Ada’s Senior Rifle Line, consisting of Libbie Milks, Samantha Crawford, Hailey Maier, and Olivia Hiester performed to “The Brighter Side of Christmas”.  As the lone competitors in this performance category the groups earned first place at all competitions including the OIPA Championships.

As the only performance in the Winds Scholastic World class, this larger student ensemble, which includes wind instruments and percussion, earned 1st place at OIPA Championships with a version of the Toy Story themed show converted from the Ada High School Marching Band season.

Ada’s Gold and Purple teams also compete in the Winterguard International (WGI) circuit.  April 6-8 the two teams will compete in Dayton at the WGI Color Guard World Championships.

These teams previously traveled to Norfolk, Virginia, to compete in the WGI Colorguard Regional where the Scholastic A team placed 2nd out of 22 groups.  The Scholastic Open team earned 1st place as the lone competitor in the class.  The Scholastic A performers also traveled to Bowling Green, Kentucky, where they participated in the preliminary round of the Midsouth Power Regionals.

Going into the WGI Championships Ada High School Scholastic A is ranked 60th out of 131 performance groups.  Ada’s Scholastic Open squad is seeded 46th in their class.

The Ada Music Boosters offer a congratulations to the students for all their hard work and to directors, Jonathan Lischak and Amy Webb for their superb show concept and design. Thanks also go to the parents of the students.
