Of ducks, mulch, and scholarships

Poster animals for Ada Lions mulch sale

By Monty Siekerman
One fine morning this week found Mr. and Mrs. Mallard resting in a front yard on West North Avenue.

The couple apparently approved of the recently mulched area of birch trees and hosta plants, which leads me into a "commercial" for the Ada Lions Club mulch sale.

Most Saturdays in May have been rainy, putting a damper in the service club's main project of raising money for scholarships for graduating Ada High School students. Thus, the club is extending its sale into June so gardeners can order more mulch and the club can earn more money for scholarships.

Here are the details:
Brown mulch costs $30 per Bobcat load while black mulch goes for $35.
Mulch is available at Bass Trucking, 0410 SR 81, just west of Ada, for pickup after 8 a.m. on Saturdays.

To order for delivery on Saturday, call 419-634-5626 or 419-302-5897. Delivery costs $10 in the Ada area, $20 in the Kenton and Lima areas.

The Lions Club has awarded more than $67,000 in scholarships to local high school graduates since the mulch sale began in 2000.

So, what happened to the ducks? Neither a curious cat nor a nearby barking dog scared them off. They skittered away at the approaching photographer, never to be seen again.
