ADA -- The Ohio Northern men's soccer team gutted out a thrilling 2-1 victory in double overtime against Rose-Hulman (Ind.) on Saturday evening at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 6-2-1 with the victory, while the Fighting Engineers fall to 4-3-1.
Seniors Mac Tompkins (Fairview, Pa.) and J.J. Fortner (Maumee/Anthony Wayne) each scored to lead Northern offensively.
Fortner and senior Cory Lains (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community) each added assists for ONU.
Northern would put pressure on Rose-Hulman during the first half, outshooting the Engineers 8-3.
After a scoreless first half, ONU was able to get on the board in the 52nd minute as Fortner dropped a touch pass behind him and found Tompkins in the goalies box to give ONU a 1-0 lead.
Following a defensive struggle, Rose-Hulman answered the ONU goal in the 82nd minute to knot the game at 1-1.
After regulation proved to be not enough time, Northern would strike in the final minute of the contest as Lains crossed a ball through traffic and found Fortner's foot for a one touch goal to lift ONU to the 2-1 victory.
Freshman Dylan Plank (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) earned the victory in the goal, posting four saves and moving his record to 5-1-0 overall.
ONU outshot the Engineers 25-8 and won the corner kick battle by a 13-5 margin.
The Polar Bears return to action Tuesday evening at 7 pm as they play host to Anderson (Ind.) in the last non-conference regular season game of the season.
