Women's soccer runs win streak to 10 games

By Caleb Scott

ADA — The No. 15-ranked Ohio Northern women's soccer team used two first half goals to extend its winning streak to 10 games as it shutout John Carroll 2-0 on Friday evening at Kerscher Stadium.

The Polar Bears improve to 12-1-1 overall, and remain unbeaten in the Ohio Athletic Conference at 5-0-0, while the Blue Streaks drop to 7-4-2, 3-1-1.

Sophomore Rose Nienaber (Cincinnatti/Oak Hills) and junior Sarah Puntel (Strongsville) each scored goals to lead ONU offensively, while sophomore Haley Moses (Mason) added an assist for ONU.

Northern's current 10-game winning streak is the longest such streak since the Polar Bears won 11 straight during the 2011 season.

After a header from freshman Jenna Fuller (Countryside, Ill./Lyons Township) was saved by the JCU keeper, Moses was able to collect the rebound and find Nienaber from five yards out to give ONU a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.

The Polar Bear offense would threaten again in the 39th minute and ultimately drew a foul in the penalty box that allowed Puntel to push the lead to 2-0 on the PK.

The Ohio Northern defense would continue its impressive play as it held John Carroll to only three second half shots, while the Polar Bears posted seven shots in the final period.

ONU out-shot John Carroll 18-5 and won the corner kick battle by a 5-1 margin.

Sophomore goalkeeper Meagan Grierson (Miamisburg) posted her league-leading eighth shutout of the season, recording two saves in the victory and improving her record to 12-1-1 on the year.

The sophomore goalkeeper currently ranks seventh all-time at ONU with 14 career shutouts.

Northern returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18 evening as it travels to Wilmington to take on the Quakers at 7 pm.
