Coach named for new ONU varsity sport

Troy Chiefari ONU's first sports coach

Troy Chiefari has been named the first head esports head coach at Ohio Northern University.

ONU plans to begin competition in League of Legends and Overwatch in the fall of 2019.

Chiefari comes to Ohio Northern with a tremendous amount of esports success as both a player and a coach.

He is a former professional player and has coached at both the professional and collegiate levels.

Chiefari played professionally Halo: CE from 2005-07.

He also served as the head coach of Tabula Rasa, which was a League of Legends semi-pro team from 2015-17 and was the competitive manager for the Esports Club at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

Chiefari said, “My goal is to establish a more responsible avenue for young adults to pursue esports while also obtaining a college degree for when their competitive playing days end."

He graduated with a computer management degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 2014.

He is a 7-year veteran of the Illinois National Guard as an aerospace engineer and his hobbies include gymnastics (tumbling and tricking), dance (contemporary and breakdancing) and games and movies.

Troy and his wife, Abby, reside in Findlay.
