Dora Deane Faine had worked at Cooper Tire 42 years

Dora Deane “Deane” Faine, 87, died Jan. 14, 2017, at Good Samaritan Care Center in Arlington, Ohio. Deane was born Oct. 6, 1929 in Findlay to Clarence and Blanche (Abbott) Wells who preceded her in death.

Deane was a secretary at Cooper Tire for 42 years before her retirement. She enjoyed antiquing, attending garage sales, sports of every kind, boating, skiing and spending time with her grandchildren.

ONU Nursing without Borders mission trip

The Ohio Northern Nursing Without Borders will make a mission trip to the Dominican Republic in May. To learn more about how these students will help those in the Dominican, search gofundme.com, then type in Ada, Ohio. You can also donate to the service project at that site. So far, $850 out of a goal of $1,500 has been raised.

ONU King Memorial area

ONU commemorated the speech of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a garden area on the south side of Taft Memorial. Here, ONU students Elizabeth Selhorst (left) and Tiffany Street pause at the garden area which includes benches and a plaque. It was unusual for the university not to acknowledge the anniversary with an event, but this year Martin Luther King Day occurred during winter break. The school recognized King's Ada address and national holiday on social media.

Reflections on the King visit to ONU

Having heard many speakers in more than 50 years of reporting, I can say none come close to the oratory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when he spoke for 40 minutes in Taft Gym. I've heard no other speaker compare to his well thought out speech, a man with charisma, keeping his audience spellbound.
A rehearing of his talk of Jan. 11, 1968, which was posted on the Ada Icon Monday in observance of the national holiday, brought these reflections to mind:
1. The civil rights leader took a middle ground saying that yes, advances had been made but there was more to accomplish.

Ada swimmers set many records at Saturday Sprints

Boys have six first-place finishes

BUCYRUS - The Ada boys swim team finished a solid fourth out of 12 teams and set several records at the Eagle Sprint Meet hosted by Colonel Crawford Saturday.

Ada posted six first-place finishes, five of which were meet records. Seniors Andrew Ross and Andrew Robey, junior Zach Beaschler and freshmen Klava Katayama and Isaac Spar set meet records for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs did well despite having just four swimmers from each of the boys and girls squads able to compete. Two second-place Ada finishes also eclipsed previous meet marks.

Here's Ada schools make-up day plan

Ada schools have used six weather/calamity days so far this school year. Due to this, school will take place on Monday, March 6, which was originally the first of a five-day spring break. In the event of another day with no school the next make-up day is March 7, then March 8 and so on. If the district reaches an 11th calamity day and absorbs all five March make-up days additional days will begin to add up at the end of the school year, according to Meri Skilliter, superintendent.
