Lady Bulldogs lose to W-G in consolation game

By Cort Reynolds

ADA - Waynesfield-Goshen jumped out to a big early lead and went on to defeat event host Ada 44-25 in the third-place game of the Border Battle girls basketball tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs fell to 1-9 with the consolation round defeat. Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers improved to 4-6 with the win.

"We just couldn't hit shots," said first-year Ada head coach Morgan Bass. "I thought our 2-3 zone definitely gave them issues. We rebounded well and stayed active.

"I am proud of how hard we played," she continued. "But we missed a lot of free throws, especially in the first half."

Waynesfield tallied the first 10 points of the game as Jordan Elliott sank a layup and a left baseline shot. The fullcourt Tiger press defense bothered the Bulldogs in the first period.

Ada dented the scoreboard on an offensive rebound layup by sophomore post Megan Light at the 3:13 mark of the opening stanza.

Both teams were scoreless the rest of the period, which ended with the Tigers on top 10-2.

Ada freshman Kirsten Poling converted a foul shot and sophomore Miranda Wills canned two charity stripers to cut the lead to seven. Poling then made a steal and drove coast to coast for a layup to edge the hosts within 12-7.

W-G wing Jaelyn Schultz buried a right wing trifecta over the Ada zone with 1:22 left in the half to build the margin to 15-7 at intermission.

Schultz also swished a 14-foot right baseline shot to open the third quarter. Wills converted a pair of free tosses at the 6:16 mark to cut the lead to 17-9.

Tiger Rylie Barrington's outside shot advanced the lead to 10. Elliott sank a fast break layin, then stole the ball and was fouled on a drive. She split the pair to extend the W-G lead to 22-9.

Two Kayla Wicker free throws pushed the margin to 15. Schultz splashed a 10-foot follow shot in the lane off a missed trey to make it 26-9.

Wills split two foul shots to end the 7-0 Tiger spurt. But Wicker swished a right wing trifecta to build the lead to 29-10.

Poling swished the first of two free tosses at the 27-second mark to make it 29-11 after three periods. The Tigers outscored Ada 14-4 in the quarter, and held the hosts without a field goal.

Waynesfield tallied a basket on the first possession of the final quarter. Wills converted four consecutive foul shots and the Tigers answered with a pair of free throws.

Wicker drained another right side triple to advance the lead to 36-15, followed by a Kiara Roof layup.

Poling splashed a foul shot, then canned a 10-foot lane shot off a nice bounce pass from Kiersten Cortez. Kylie Acheson drained a right corner triple to pull Ada within 39-21.

W-G netted a putback layin, followed by a 17-foot swisher from the circle by Timber Blankenship.

Peyton Spencer scored inside for the Tigers yet Bulldog Brook Phillips drained a pair of foul shots to provide the final score of 44-25.

Wicker topped all scorers with 11 points and Schultz contributed nine markers. Elliott and Barrington each added seven points.

Wills led Ada with nine points while Poling added seven.

The Tigers sank 13 two-point goals and hit three trifectas. W-G converted nine of 17 (53 percent) from the charity stripe. Ada canned just five field goals, but hit on 14 of 27 (52 percent) at the foul line.
