ONU women's and men's tennis teams return from break with winning records

ONU women’s tennis team was in California and the men’s team in South Carolina over spring break. Here’s an update on both team’s play last week.

Women’s tennis
WHITTIER & TORRANCE, Calif. — Senior Ashley Ochsenhirt (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) surpassed the 100 career victory plateau and posted a 4-0 record Thursday, guiding the Ohio Northern women's tennis squad to 8-1 and 7-2 wins over Rio Hondo (Calif.) CC and El Camino (Calif.) CC, respectively, to conclude the program's 2019 Spring Break trip.

Ochsenhirt is now 101-39 in three seasons at Ohio Northern after transferring from Mississippi College following her freshman campaign.

She joins junior teammate Mackenzie Wills (Ada) in the 100-Win Club after the latter eclipsed the same standard on Monday.

With the victories, the Polar Bears improve to 8-2 overall in the 2018-19 season. Northern finishes their five-match Spring Break trip with a 3-2 overall record after defeating Cypress (Calif.) CC 8-1 on Monday and falling to Occidental (Calif.) 5-4 and California Lutheran 5-1.

Meanwhile, Rio Hondo fell to 2-5 overall while El Camino dropped to 4-3 on the year.

Men’s tennis
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Ohio Northern men's tennis program claimed its third win in the 2018-19 season Thursday afternoon, defeating the Bridgewater (Va.) Eagles 8-1 at the Chaplin Park Tennis Complex in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

With the victory, the Polar Bears even their overall record at 3-3 this year, including a 2-1 mark on their annual Spring Break trip. Meanwhile, BC falls to 2-4 overall on the season.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Sophomore Vinh Thai (Galloway/St. Charles) and freshman Noah Elliott(Hilliard/Davidson) each posted 4-0 records, guiding the Ohio Northern men's tennis team in a tight 5-4 loss to Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) and a 9-0 triumph over Roanoke (Va.).

With Friday's results, the Polar Bears move to 4-4 overall this season. Eastern Nazarene is now 5-4 overall while Roanoke drops to 0-4 on the year.

ONU concludes its 2019 Spring Break trip to Hilton Head Island with a 3-2 record. The Orange and Black previously defeated Randolph (Va.) 9-0 and Bridgewater (Va.) 8-1 and lost to Wilkes (Pa.) 6-3 earlier this week.
