The Ohio Northern volleyball team retired the No. 9 jersey of former standout and three-time All-American middle hitter Liz Schnelle in a ceremony on Saturday afternoon.

Ten years removed from the court, she remains ONU's all-time career kills leader with 2,222 and hitting percentage leader at .367 from 2006-09.

Schnelle was named First Team All-America and in both her junior and seniors seasons and was a Third Team All-American as a sophomore.

She was four-time All-OAC honoree and was named the OAC Player of the Year twice.

Schnelle was named the Division III National Player of the Week an impressive five time in her career. Those five honors are the second-most in NCAA history across all levels.

She also holds the single-season school record with 592 kills in 2008. She also ranks sixth at ONU with 351 career blocks and is eighth with 86 block solos.

Academically, Schnelle was also very impressive, earning First Team Academic All-America honors in both her junior and senior seasons. She was also a three-time Academic All-OAC honoree.

"Liz is the most decorated volleyball player in ONU history," Ohio Northern head volleyball coach Kate Witte said. "She excelled both athletically and academically for four years and is very deserving of this high honor. We are proud to have her as a member of our ONU family."

She graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting and finance in spring of 2010 and was ONU's female Clyde Lamb Award winner.

The Polar Bears are ranked No. 16 nationally and sport a 10-3 record thus far in 2019. They will open OAC play on Tuesday when they host Muskingum at the ONU Sports Center.
