ONU spring sports update

Junior Andrew Cochran (Wooster) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of Week for the week of March 29-April 4.

Cochran won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.

This marks the second time this season and the third time in his career that Cochran has received the honor.

He was named Player of the week on March 29, 2021 and March 9, 2020.

Track and field
The Ohio Northern outdoor track and field team won five events and finished second out of five teams at the Polar Bear Spring Invitational on a Sunny and breezy Saturday afternoon at Kerscher Stadium.

The Polar Bears (13-4 overall) finished with 153 points.

Junior Nate Dean (Euclid/Villa Angela-Saint Joseph) won swept the 200 and 400-meter dashes, winning in :21.63 and :49.47, respectively.

Senior Colin McCullough (Galion) won the 400 hurdles in :55.75 and senior Sam Krabacher (Hamilton/Badin) won the 800 in 1:55.15.

Junior Patrick Baker (Massillon/Jackson) won the 500 in 15:24.81 and freshman Keegan Digby (Bowling Green/Otsego) won the shut put with a heave of 14.89 meters.

Mount Union won the meet with 247 points, Wilmington was third with 97, Heidelberg was fourth with 47 and Muskingum as fifth with 25.

The Polar Bears will return home next Saturday at the Heidelberg Invitational.

Men's lacrosse
WESTERVILLE — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team dropped a tight 10-8 decision at Otterbein on Saturday in an Ohio Athletic Conference battle at Memorial Stadium.

The Polar Bears fall to 3-4 overall and are 2-3 in the OAC, while the Cardinals improve to 5-2, 4-1.

Northern jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first 7:30 of the game on goals by senior Joe O'Connell (Fishers, Ind.), junior Ethan Falsone (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and senior Pat Berthelsen-Leon (Bethpage, N.Y.).

But the Cardinals would answer with six straight over the next 12:38 to grab a 6-3 lead.

ONU scored the final three goals of the half when O'Connell, junior Christopher Cranston (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) and freshman Andrew Caliri (Lexington, Mass.) found the net to tie it at 6-6 at intermission.

The two teams traded goals in the third quarter and the game was even at 8-all heading into the fourth.

OU made it 9-8 just 1:44 into the period and tacked on an insurance goal with 3:41 left to play.

O'Connell finished with two goals and senior Cameron Marous (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) had a goal and three assists for ONU.

Northern out-shot Otterbein 33-31 and won the ground battle 24-23.

Sophomore Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) had 12 saves in goal for ONU.

The Polar Bears will return home on Wednesday to face Heidelberg in a non-conference contest at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
