ONU women golfers set 18- and 36-hole school record

Here's an update on ONU golf team.

Freshman Grace Honigford (West Chester/Lakota East) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Golf Player of the Week for the week of April 13-19.

Honigford won Medalist honors for the third consecutive tournament and the fifth time in 10 tournaments this season, posting a 9-over par 78-75—153. Her 153 is the third-lowest 36-hole total in ONU history.

She also led a record-setting Ohio Northern effort as the Polar Bears also won the team title.

The first round 318 on Saturday broke the previous record of 321 and the 36-hole 639 broke the previous mark of 648. Both marks were set at the Wittenberg Fall Invitational on Oct. 9-10, 2010.

This is the second consecutive week that Honigford has won the award. It also marks the fourth time this season that an ONU player has received the award.

The Polar Bears will return to action with the OAC Championships on April 30-May 2.

ONU women's golf

The Ohio Northern women's golf team won the Otterbein Cardinal Super Classic in record-setting fashion on Saturday and Sunday at Northstar Golf Course.

The Polar Bears (26-3 overall) set 18- and 36-hole school records with a 318-321—639 to defeat Otterbein by 35 strokes in the five team tournament.

The first round 318 on Saturday broke the previous record of 321 and the 36-hole 639 broke the previous mark of 648. Both marks were set at the Wittenberg Fall Invitational on Oct. 9-10, 2010.

Seniors Lydia Cranmer (Farmington Hills, Mich./Ladywood) and Annika Neumann (Valley City/Avon) finished right behind in second and third with 78-78—156 and a 78-79—157, respectively. Those scores are tied the fourth and eighth all-time at ONU as well.

The three players all fired 6-over par 78s to lead the 42-women field after the first day of the two-day tournament.

Otterbein finished second with a 327-337—664, Marietta was third with a 366-373—739, Muskingum was fourth with a 365-378—743 and Capital finished fifth with a 383-378—761.

Playing as individuals, sophomores Torrie Smith (Russiaville, Ind./Western) and Bella Orofino (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) finished sixth and seventh. Smith was sixth with an 81-85—166 and Orofino was seventh with an 81-86—187.

Sophomore Meghan Utterdyke (Lebanon/Fenwick) was 12th with an 84-89—173 and sophomore Olivia Galigher(Bolivar/Tuscarawas) was 13th with an 85-90—175.

MEN'S GOLF

Junior Andrew Slusher (Covington) fired a 74-77—151 to lead the Ohio Northern men's golf team to a fourth place finish out of five teams at the Otterbein Cardional Super Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Northstar Golf Course.

The Polar Bears (13-22-2 overall) finished with a 322-315—637. Otterbein won the team title with a 304-298—602, Capital was second at 312-314—626, Marietta was third at 315-314—629 and Muskingum was fifth at 324-317—641.

Slusher finished tied for fourth out of 46 golfers with his 9-over par 151.

Junior Austin White (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) shot an 83-77—160, sophomore Josh Steyer(Powell/Olentangy Liberty) carded an 80-81—161, junior Jared Hernandez (Van Wert) had an 85-82—167 and junior Nolan Kimberly (Zanesville) posted an 88-80—168.
