Weekend doctor: Gallstones

Gallstones are commonly diagnosed with an ultrasound though other modalities can be used as well

By Thomas Strigle, MD
General Surgery
Surgical Associates of Northwest Ohio

Gallstones are precipitations (collections) of bile that form into stones that range in size from sand crystals to golf balls.

They usually form in the gallbladder which is a sac-like organ sitting beneath the liver on the right side of the abdomen. The gallbladder’s purpose is to store the bile that the liver creates.

Bile travels through ducts to empty into the intestine and helps digest the fatty foods we eat. Gallstones occur from an unbalanced collection of cholesterol, lecithin and bile salts in the bile.

September is Sexual Health Awareness Month.

Did you know that one in two sexually active persons will contract a sexually transmitted infection (STI) by age 25? However, this is not the only age group affected by STIs. STIs affect people of all ages and backgrounds.

There are nearly 20 million new cases each year in the U.S. alone. Protecting yourself from STIs and getting screened for STIs is important. The only way to know if you have an STI is to be tested!

Regulating our emotions during a pandemic

2020 has certainly had an emotional toll on us all.

By Christian Steiner, MD

Psychiatry Center of Northwest Ohio

How do we regulate our emotions in times of uncertainty? 2020 has been a year that many of us wish would come to an end. A pandemic that has people fearful, neighbors arguing and everyone forced to socially isolate. Watching a volatile market take staccato breaths while playing with our life savings and retirement.

School and sports are either canceled or placed on some form of special schedule. The certainties that we take for granted are all uncertain. 2020 has certainly had an emotional toll on us all.
