Written thanks and other basic rules for tax-deductible donations

Thanksgiving to New Year’s is a time for holiday generosity and tax-minimizing thrift.  Last year, about 25 percent of the Ohioans who filed federal individual tax returns claimed tax deductions for charitable donations, to the tune of $4.7 billion.

Individuals have some basic rules to follow to claim the tax savings, but they’re not alone.  Charitable organizations benefiting from the generosity and thrift of Ohio ’s tax-savvy donors also have some basic rules to follow to ensure that their donors’ contributions qualify as tax-deductible.

By following Internal Revenue Service rules and through mutual support, taxpayers and charitable organizations both benefit.

IRS seeks volunteers for free tax prep programs in Ohio

Recruitment is underway throughout Ohio for volunteers and partner organizations for the Internal Revenue Service’s free tax preparation programs.  Volunteers must receive training and achieve certification over the next two months to be ready for the start of the 2013 tax filing season.

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free tax help to seniors as well as to low-to-moderate income and disabled individuals.  Partner organizations set up free tax preparation sites in local communities, where volunteers meet with and assist qualifying taxpayers.

Ada McDonald's collecting nonperishable items to help stock Ada Food Pantry

One of the best parts of the end of the year is the changing of the seasons and the chance for families to spend time together during the holidays.

Unfortunately, for many families the holiday season, which is filled with lavish meals for many, is a stark reminder of how difficult it can be to provide even a modest meal for their family.

The Ada McDonald’s Restaurant, owned by Jerry Lewis, is hoping to make a difference this holiday season by holding a drive for the Ada Food Pantry.

The Ada Food Pantry helps provide families in need with a two to three day supply of food in addition to some hygiene items as well.
