Hard hat tours Saturday, Oct. 27

Your chance to take a peek inside the ONU engineer building under construction

By Monty Siekerman
Do you want to take a peek at the new James Lehr Kennedy Engineering Building now under construction near English Chapel and Heterick Library? Hard hat tours will be offered between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Visitors, including ONU’s Homecoming returnees, can get a glimpse of what is in store for future engineers who study here. The lobby area in the center of the building will be accessible for four hours on that Saturday. Work on the $30 million project has progressed rapidly since construction began in mid May. The large, three-story structure will be occupied next fall.

Ada's Viva Maria: Featuring great Italian and American dinners

A good, made-from-scratch restaurant, beloved by locals and students

Before walking through the door of Viva Maria, all I knew about the place was that it was an Italian restaurant with big portions and huge support from both the local community and ONU campus crowd. My husband and I walked up to the restaurant around 8 p.m. on a weeknight.

The restaurant is currently housed in the historic Ada Armory. Do not be fooled by the stark, industrial facade; this building houses a good, made-from-scratch Italian-American restaurant, beloved by both locals and students.

If I'm lucky

A petunia I buy from Amherst might be from a seedling planted by the SBA administrator

What’s it like when the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture comes to visit a greenhouse south of Alger?

A half hour before the arrival of Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue his communications and security people enter the sprawling 4-acre greenhouse.

Soon, Hardin County Sheriff Keith Everhart and a state trooper join the crowd.

Secretary Perdue’s big RV pulls up to the door...on time, which is unusual for a high-ranking member of government. Although the Secretary has several other stops in Ohio before the day ends, he has scheduled plenty of time to talk with the owners and learn about modern greenhouse growing.
