Ada Science Fair: From bubblegum to basketballs

The Ada Middle School hosted a Science Fair on January 20 that featured the work of 66 students who completed science projects.  All but one were 7th graders. One 8th grader also participated, building on her project from 2021.

7th-8th grade science teacher Alayne Schrock provided the Icon with the following details.

Fourteen students qualified for the virtual District 6 Science Day hosted by Ohio Northern University on March 26 by receiving a superior rating on their project.

VFW Great Bowls of Fire Chili Cook Off, January 22

The Ream McElroy VFW Post 9381 located at 2147 State Route 235 will host the Great Bowls of Fire Chili Cookoff and DNA Karaoke on January 22.

  • Chili must be at the VFW by 4:45
  • Tasting will be from 5-6:30 p.m.
  • $5 to eat and judge chili
  • Karaoke from 7-11 p.m.

Chili cooks: please list all ingredients except spices for the safety of those with food allergies.

Red Cross Blood Drive on January 24

Visiting Nurses & Hospice, 1200 S. Main St., will host a Red Cross blood drive on from 11:30 a.m. 5:30 p.m. on January 24.

There are openings for blood and Power Red donations. In Janaury, donors can be entered for a chance to win a trip for two to the Super Bowl

  • Masks are required regardless of vaccination status
  • Walk-ins are welcome

Please fill out a Rapid Pass prior to your appointment and have your donor I.D. or driver's license ready. Online registration at https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/find-drive.

Astronomy Club meets January 12

The Hardin County Astronomy Club will meet at 7 p.m. on January 12 at the
McGuffey Community Room, which is behind the post office at 402 Courtright St. 

The meeting will include sharing sketches of the constellations Auriga and Taurus and a brief introduction to the constellation Taurus.

There will also be a postponed lecture about the effect of Christmas lights on light pollution. Citizen Science opportunities will be introduced.

Mask use and social distancing will be encouraged.

Beatitudes Christmas meal to go

The Beatitudes food pantry is providing a grab-and-go Christmas Dinner with ham and sweet potatoes on Tuesday, December 21 from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. This is a carryout only opportunity. Please call 419-788-9459 to RSVP. 

Beatitudes community center is located at 210 N. Main St. Ada. Director Deb Curlis notes that there will be some 85-100 meals prepared.

The center will then be closed December 22-27. It will reopen on Tuesday, December 28 and provide a New Year party bag that day. Then the center will be closed December 29-January 3.

Between games C-R and Ada team up to honor Bill Faine

The Cory-Rawson Athletics Facebook page has issued this invitation for Saturday, December 18:

"Coming to Saturday's boys basketball game against Ada? Make sure you dress in your best superhero attire as we honor the late Bill Faine between the JV and Varsity contests! The theme for both schools will be superhero, so wear your super hero gear!"

While Faine taught at Ada Schools, he grew up in Mt. Cory and attended Cory-Rawson schools before attending Bowling Green State University.
