Eleven active forensic nurses serve victims of violence in Hancock and Allen County hospitals

With social justice issues like human trafficking, sexual assault and intimate partner violence in the media, one might ask: “What is a forensic nurse?”

A forensic nurse is a registered nurse who blends the holistic care of nursing to the body, mind and spirit—to include principles from the law, medicine and science.

A forensic patient is an individual who has a healthcare issue and intersects with the legal system.

How to avoid common summertime poison hazards

 When the summertime heat is on, it's time to get outside, enjoy time with family and have fun. To keep your family safe this summer, check out these summer poison prevention tips.

According to the National Capital Poison Center (Poison Control), when there's a change in the usual routine, such as a road trip or other type of travel, poisonings increase. Because many families travel and engage in other activities that could present poison hazards during the summer, this season is the perfect time to take a few simple precautions.

Hardin extension office now open

Visitors will be asked to wear a mask, sanitize upon entry, follow social distancing protocols; masks are available at the door

 Hardin County extension office has reopened with restrictions on June 17. 

In order to follow university health and safety protocols, the Hardin County office staff have created the following plan to open for in-person services: 

The office will be open Monday – Friday from 8 to 9 a.m. for the at-risk population, such as the elderly and immunocompromised. 

The office will open to the general public from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. 

A limited staff will be available during these hours each day, as the majority continue to telework to limit interaction and continue social distancing.

6.16 inches of rainfall recorded in Liberty Township in May

For the period of May 1-May 31, Hardin Extension rainfall reporters recorded an average of 4.73 inches of rain in Hardin County. 

 Last year, the average rainfall for the same time was 5.12 inches.  Rainfall for May was 0.30 inches more than the ten-year average rainfall for the month.

Liberty Township had 6.16 inches according to Phil Epley, who reports for the township.

Marion Township received 6.42 inches of rain for May, the highest amount of the township sites.  Jackson Township had the lowest rainfall amount for the month of May with 3.60 inches.
