December concerts featuring ONU Jazz Band, Wind and Symphony Orchestras

The Ohio Northern University Department of Music closes out the year with an ONU Jazz Band concert on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 7:30 p.m. and a performance by the ONU Wind and Symphony Orchestras on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m. Both shows will be held at the Freed Center for the Performing Arts.

‘Something for Everyone’

The Ohio Northern University Department of Music presents an eclectic evening of music, “Something for Everyone,” in the Snyder Recital Hall in the Presser Building on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature several ONU seniors, Elizabeth Druesedow, a music performance major from Sharon Center, Ohio; Brandon Guillen, a mathematical statistics major from Lima, Ohio; and Nicole Wells, a music performance major from Germantown, Ohio, in a chamber-music setting.

Jill Chapman breaks 27-year-old ONU swimming record

Sophomore Jill Chapman broke a 27-year old school record in the 100 free to lead the Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team on the third and final day of the Wooster Invitational on Saturday at the Wooster High School Natatorium.

The Polar Bears finished seventh of 10 teams with 832.5 points in the 20 events.

NCAA Division II foe Gannon (Pa.) won the team title with 1489.5 points, Wooster was second with 1111.5 points and Case Western Reserve was third with 1052 points.

Chapman finished third in the 100 free in a school record :52.27, breaking the previous record of :52.40 set by All-American Nancy Emerick in 1988.

University awarded Undergraduate Education Program Development grant

Ohio Northern University has been awarded a Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) Program Development grant from the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in the amount of $50,000 to deepen the intellectual and theological exploration of vocation among undergraduate students on campus. 

David MacDonald, University chaplain, will lead the project, which is titled “Creating a Common Language of Vocation.” A Vocational Study Team (VST) also will be established, made up of representatives from ONU’s offices of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Polar Careers as well as the University’s five colleges.

ONU Reading Series continues with pair of authors Dec. 4

The Ohio Northern University Department of English continues its 2014 Fall Reading Series with authors Christopher DeWeese and Heather Christle in the Elzay Gallery of Art on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

DeWeese is the author of “The Black Forest” and the chapbooks “Fireproof Swan” and “Maneuvers.” His poems have appeared in publications such as Boston Review, Crazyhorse, Fence and Tin House. Currently an assistant professor of poetry at Wright State University, DeWeese has also taught at Agnes Scott College, Emory University and Smith College.
