Touch, but don't eat

Mushroom poisoning only comes from eating the flesh of the mushroom not from handling it.

By Monty Siekerman
Drew Mowery, 2, sits among a display of large mushrooms in the 200 block of West North Avenue last week (they have since been mowed down).

He's the son of Eric and Jessica Mowery. Wanting to know more about the mushrooms, the Ada Icon turned to Curtis Young, Ph.D., who lives not far away.

He has seen the mushrooms pop up in the yard for many years and could readily identify the variety and tell us something about it. In fact, they also grow in his yard.

He is Extension Educator for Van Wert County.

Ada VFW third annual car show

Story and photos by Monty Siekerman
The Ada VFW Post 9381 third annual car show Saturday brought out many people displaying their vehicles, those who wanted to see the old and exotic cars, as well as one special dog, Rollo.

Shown here are Chris Hamacre, senior vice commander of the post, with 7-year-old Great Dane Rollo, a post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) service dog who is at the post often and makes himself quite at home there.

They and Wynn Hauenstein, post quartermaster, stand beside Wynn's car. Wynn served as chairman of the car show.

A moist June causes crop problems

Here's the rainfall report for June from Hardin County extension reporters.

Liberty Township (Ada area) saw the least rain, 2.76 inches. Roundhead the most: 7 inches. Average countywide was about 5 inches, close to the 10-year average. The way things are shaping up for July, look for higher than average rainfall.

How did the moisture in June affect farming? The Extension reports:

"Rain persisted most of the month of June, with precipitation occurring 2/3 of the days.  Some fields continued to pond and flood in low areas, areas with compaction, and other hard to drain soils.
