ONU gains basketball Player of the Week

Junior Ryan Bruns (Chickasaw/Marion Local) has been named the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 4-10.

Bruns led the Polar Bears (5-2 overall, 3-0 OAC) to a perfect 2-0 week in the conference, including a win over Mount Union that moved ONU into first place in the conference standings.

The junior earned the honor for the first time in his career after averaging a double-double during the week with 27.0 points per contest and 10.0 rebounds per game.

Barcaskey Player of Week

For the second consecutive week, sophomore Nate Barcaskey (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) has been named the Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week.

Barcaskey quickly picked up his third career OAC Wrestler of the Week honor after going 2-0 over the course of the week to lead the Polar Bears (1-2 overall, 0-1 OAC).

Northern opened the week at No. 22 Mount Union where Barcaskey closed the match with a victory at Heavyweight with a 5-2 decision.

In its contest at Manchester (Ind.), ONU saw Barcaskey pick up a pin in 3:41 to improve to 14-2 on the year.

Katayama, Beaschler win at Napoleon meet

NAPOLEON - Ada's Klava Katayama and Zach Beaschler each claimed individual wins as the Bulldog swim teams competed at the 14-team Wildcat Invitational in Napoleon Saturday.

 

Ada sophomore Katayama won the 200 freestyle race while senior Beaschler captured the 200 individual medley event to pace the Bulldog swimmers.

 

The Lady Bullogs finished 10th out of 14 teams, and the Bulldogs boys came in ninth out of 11 squads.

 

Napoleon won the girls team title with 599 points, followed by Akron Hoban with 423. Ada scored 54 points.

 

Ottoville shoots down Bulldog cagers

OTTOVILLE - Unbeaten host Ottoville pulled away from a close game near halftime to post an 83-51 non-league win over the Ada boys basketball team Saturday night.  

 

The Bulldogs fell to 1-2 with their second road defeat in as many nights, while hot-shooting Ottoville improved to 4-0 with the win.

 

Ada trailed 18-13 after one period and was only down four late in the first half before the Big Green spurted to a 36-26 halftime lead.

 

Ottoville then poured in 28 third quarter points to extend the margin to 64-40 and put the game out of reach.

 

Kalida stymies Ada boys

KALIDA - Host Kalida smothered the Ada boys basketball team 64-18 Friday night in a non-league contest.  

 

The Bulldogs fell to 1-1 with the defeat, while Kalida improved to 2-0 with the lopsided win.

 

Freshman guard Zac Swaney led Ada with nine points.

 

Trevor Lambert, a 6-3 Kalida junior forward, made all 10 of his field goal attempts en route to a game-high 23 points. Wildcat junior guard Connor Krouse added 10 markers.

 

Bulldog matmen 2nd at Lancer Invite

MIDDLE POINT - Ada senior Chase Sumner was named tournament MVP after leading the Bulldog wrestling team to a strong second- place finish at the 12-team Lincolnview Invitational Saturday.

 

Twelve of the 13 Ada wrestlers placed fifth or higher in their weight class at the event. The runner-up team finish was Ada's best-ever showing at the Lancer Invite.

 

Sumner won the 145-pound division title with a 3-2 win over Bretz of Van Wert in the finals. It was the second time Sumner was named MVP of the Lancer tourney.

 

Freshman Colton Biederman finished second in the 106 lbs. division to improve to 7-1 this season.
