Men's tennis out of tourney

BEREA -- The Ohio Northern men's tennis team bowed out of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in the quarterfinals with a 5-0 loss at Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday afternoon at the Pop Collins Tennis Courts.

The Polar Bears end their season with an even 11-11 record, a 6-game improvement over the 2015-16 squad's mark of 6-13.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 17-3 and advance to the OAC Tournament semifinals on Friday at the Lindner Tennis Center in Mason.

Women's tennis advances in tourney

The Ohio Northern women's tennis team advanced in the Ohio Athletic Conference for the 16th consecutive season by posting a 5-0 victory over Marietta on Tuesday afternoon at University Courts.

The second-seeded Polar Bears improve to 21-4 on the year and are now a perfect 16-0 in the quarterfinals in the 16-year history of the OAC Tournament.

Seventh-seeded Marietta ends its season at 3-18.

Freshman Kaleigh Cummins(Springfield/Northeastern) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles to lead the Polar Bears, who did not lose a game in any of their victories.

Northern swept the three doubles matches by 8-0 scores and won by forfeit at No. 6 singles to get the win.

Journalist to talk about President Trump

Journalist Martin Sieff, who has earned three Pulitzer Prize nominations for international reporting, will discuss “Donald Trump and the World” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3 at the College of Law. The talk is is free and open to the public.

Sieff also will address ONU’s students at noon on May 3 at the law school. This lecture is also open to the public.

Since Donald Trump’s election, Sieff has toured the United States, putting on seminars for admirals and Air Force generals about how Trump will respond to international crises. Wednesday’s “Donald Trump and the World” is the same talk he has given to the admirals and generals. 

Romanian teenage musicians here

Four teenage Romanian musicians, all of whom are string players, are visiting ONU this week to share their skills.

Anamaria Joldea and Estera Racz will present a recital at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3 in Presser Hall. Radu Kis and Maria Marica will perform as soloists with the Ohio Northern Symphony at 7:30 p.m. on May 6 in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts. Joldea and Racz also will perform with the symphony during the concert.

The Romanian students will attend classes, lessons and rehearsals while interacting with ONU students and faculty members throughout the week.

Jazz program set for Thursday

The ONU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo will cap the 2016-2017 academic year with a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 4 in the McIntosh Center Bear Cave. The event is free and open to the public. The ensemble and combo will perform everything from hard-driving swing, Latin, rock and funk charts, to lush ballads and soulful blues.

Accident claims life of Dola teen

Layton Rogers, 16, of Dola died in a car/train accident at 3:50 p.m. on Monday. The crash occurred in the 12,000 block of Co Rd 60 west of US RT 68. The Hardin County sheriff's Office reports that Layton was traveling west bound on Co Rd 60 and failed to yield for a south bound CSX train.

The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene by Hardin County Coroner Larry Kuk. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Multi County Crash Investigation Team, Dunkirk Fire and EMS, CSX Railroad Police and Minich’s Towing. The crash remains under investigation.
