Huey breaks ONU and OAC records

AKRON — Sophomore Nolan Huey (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) broke the school and OAC record in the 200 I.M. to lead the Ohio Northern men on the first day of the 2018 Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium.

Huey touched in 1:51.10, breaking the OAC and ONU record of 1:51.63, set in 2013 by Jordan Breitigam. His time also surpasses the NCAA "B" Cut of 1:51.98.

Ohio Northern is third in the team standings with 178 points.

The 200 free relay team of junior Pete He (Mason), senior Thomas Golba(Kettering/Alter), junior Justin Chapman (Springboro) and senior Ian Simpson(Strongsville) started the meet with a victory in 1:23.41, just .08 of a second off the OAC record.

The top three finishers in each individual event and the top two relay teams earn All-Conference honors.

Freshman Ryan Mow (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) earned All-OAC kudos in the 500 free, finishing third in 4:43.07.

The Polar Bears are gunning for their 13th OAC Championships crown under 14th-year head coach Peggy Ewald and are in second place out of five teams through five of the 20 events.

John Carroll holds a slim 219-181 lead over Mount Union with Wilmington in fourth with 101 points and Baldwin Wallace in fifth with 85 points.

Day two of the three-day championships is Friday with prelims at 10 am and finals at 6 pm and the final day is Saturday with prelims at 10 am and finals at 5:30 pm.
