Ohio Academy of History panel discussions open to public

Ohio Northern University will host the Ohio Academy of History’s Annual Meeting this Friday and Saturday, April 14-15, in the Dicke College of Business Administration building, 525 S. Main St., Ada.

Social studies and history students from ONU will assist with running the event. The public is welcome to attend the panels.

Topics will range from local to international history, including a presentation on the McGuffey onion field strike and a panel on the history of professional football. Speakers will include Ohio Northern professors, educators from other institutions, and museum professionals from ONU, Allen County, Paulding County and Rutherford Hayes museums.

A panel on “Public Facing History” will include ONU social studies and history major Jacob Wagner along with history professor Russ Crawford, Ph.D. Their presentation is titled “Creating and Consuming Popular History through Podcasts and Historical Reenactments.”

The same roundtable will include ONU alumnus Jared Hardesty, Ph.D., BA ’08, who will discuss “Working Through Hard History: Confronting the Public History of Slavery as an Academic.” Hardesty is a history professor at Western Washington University.

Heather Summer Collins, BA ‘16, a University of Minnesota graduate student and ONU adjunct, will present on "The Dependency of Independence: Louis XVI, Royalism, and Republicanism in the United States, 1783-1788” during one of the Saturday afternoon sessions.
