Here's what the Ada Icon is all about

Welcome to the Ada Icon. For first-viewers, here's helpful answers to your questions.

Q: What is the Icon?
A: Think of the Icon as a daily newspaper on the web.

Q: When did it first appear on the web?
A: March 15, 2012.

How much do I pay to view the Icon?
A: Nothing. It's free to view. Unlike other newspaper websites, there is no limit to the number of stories you may read. And, you may access all of our archived material.

Q: How does the Icon make money?
A: Through very affordable local advertising. We have over 50 local advertisers.

Q: What might we expect to find in The Icon?
A: All sorts of things. Our primary coverage area is the Ada school district. According to Google Analytics, 90 percent of our viewers live winthin 25 miles of Ada. That takes in Lima, Findlay and Kenton. We also have a loyal following of viewers who grew up here and moved away, or who lived here for a time, but no longer do.

Q: How many viewers do you have?
A: Ada Icon experiences over 10,000 viewers in a 30-day period.

Q: Where do you obtain stories for the Icon?
A: Viewers send us news items. We also post all Ohio Northern University news, and cover all aspects of the Ada community.

We provide extensive sports coverage of Ada High School and Ohio Northern University.

We post all obituaries provided by area funeral homes. We post obituaries of former residents when their family members provide us with information.

Q: Are there other Icons? Do you have other products in addition to your website?
A: In September 2009 we launched Bluffton Icon (www.blufftonicon.com). It is in a community the same size as Ada and the two school districts touch. There are many commonalities between the two communities, even though they are in different counties. For example, Ada is home of Ohio Northern University, as Bluffton is home of Bluffton University. Ada Icon covers the Ada school district and ONU in the same way that Bluffton Icon covers Bluffton.

HERE ARE SOME OF
THE TOP STORIES OF
JANUARY 2021

(These top stories change each month)

• ADA RECYCLING NOW
ACCEPTS ADDITIONAL ITEMS

Ada recycling bins are about to become tubbier, and it’s a good thing, according to Rumpke Waste and Recycling.

Rumpke, the contractor for Ada waste and recycling collection, announced this month an  expansion what it accepts as recycled items.

The addition includes polypropylene plastic tubs. These products are labeled #5. (Please note that not all #5 items may be recycled, however.)

Here’s Rumpke’s new polypropylene plastic tub recycled list:
• Plastic bottles, jugs and other containers
• butter, sour cream and cottage cheese tubs
• yogurt and fruit cups

The addition of Rumpke now accepting polypropylene plastic tubs is made possible with a grant from The Recycling Partnership. The funding helps Rumpke add nearly $2 million in new sorting to better extract these containers for recycling.

• ADA COUNCIL PRESIDENT
OUTLINES 2021 VILLAGE GOALS

Bob Simmons, Ada council president, outlined his 2021 goals for the village in a report presented at the Jan. 5 council session. Click here to view the Jan. 19 council agenda, which includes his report.

The 12-point report includes:
• Continued work on some alley vacations
• Grandview project, discussion with residents, review scope of project
• Our green space – developing policies for items recycled, hours open, located near Ada water treatment plant
• Memorabilia in attic of depot and removal of train club layout
• New evaluation system unique to Ada for its four administrators
• Paint depot and lamp posts in Ada
• Complete illustrated duties of all positions in the village

it is ONU’s  sesquicentennial (August 1871)
• Hiring of Ada pool personnel and operating standards
• Complete fire hydrant repairs
• Hire manager for depot flowers
• Location of personnel files

His 2021 report also includes listing of goals set for 2020, which follow:

• ADA SCHOOLS RETURN
TO TRADITIONAL SCHEDULE

Meri Skilliter, Ada school superintendent, yesterday updated the school community with its next school plan. Here letter to the community follows:

After looking at our numbers, and meeting with the health department today, we are happy to announce that it is our plan to start students back to school on a traditional schedule, all students five days a week, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021.

As always, continuing this model will be dependent on staffing numbers, recommendations from the county health department, and any state mandates that might occur.

We believe that the best model, educationally, is to have students here every day, and we will strive to do that for as long as we are safely able to do so.

Please remind students that it will be important to continue to follow masking and social distancing protocols.

It is important to us that you continue to monitor the health of your student(s) and not send them with any of the symptoms of Covid. You can review this information at Frequently Asked Questions (ohio.gov).

For students who are dropped off in the morning, we want to provide some tips to encourage efficient and safe drop off procedures since we will have additional traffic with all students returning.

Students should be prepared to be dropped off once they are on the curb area in the parking lot. Please have your students prepared to exit your vehicle quickly once you are in this area.

Once your car comes to a stop on the curb near the school, have your student exit the vehicle and get to the sidewalk. Middle school and high school students are welcomed to enter the building at door 17, which is at the end of the high school hallway.

There is to be no parking during drop off times. Being prepared for drop off, as well as following the directions of Officer Carl and other school staff, will help keep the drop off area safe and the flow of traffic moving efficiently.

If you have any questions, please let your building principals know.
