ONU honor students to present oral arguments
Ohio Northern University students in the Department of History, Politics and Justice’s “Appellate Advocacy” undergraduate honors course will present “Mandatory Life Without Parole Sentencing for Juvenile Offenders” in the Pettit College of Law Moot Court Room on Tuesday, May 1, at 6:30 p.m.
The presentation will feature oral arguments heard by seven-member bench. Members of the bench will include Ohio Supreme Court Justice Robert Cupp (serving as chief justice); Alicia Hawley, a Chicago-based attorney specializing in white-collar defense; Louisville prosecutor Jason Butler, who works in criminal defense and is the youngest prosecutor in Kentucky to win a death penalty case; Miami University professor and former prosecutor Dan Herron; Jim Wagoner, a Louisville-based attorney specializing in employment law; Autumn Manley, ONU lecturer; and Rob Waters, ONU visiting assistant professor of history.
Student presenters for the petitioner will be Shane Bogusz, a second-year pharmacy major from Belmar N.J.; Daniella Chambers, a senior international studies major from Fremont, Ohio; John Patrick Fernandez, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Mount Vernon, Ohio; Tyson Miller, a freshman theatre arts and international production major from Marblehead, Mass.; and Nathan Shay, a sophomore civil engineering student from Enon, Ohio.
The respondent will be represented by Katie Deeter, a freshman political science major from Troy, Ohio; Alex Koenig, a senior psychology major form Mentor, Ohio; Taylor Manahan, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Bellefontaine, Ohio; Melissa Michaud, a freshman biochemistry major from Brecksville, Ohio; and Abby Thayer, a freshman chemistry major from Painesville, Ohio.
The oral arguments are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the presentation.
