ONU student receives national scholarship
Joanna Snyder, an Ohio Northern University junior mathematics major from Fort Recovery, Ohio, has been awarded a Prospective 7-12 Secondary Teacher Course Work Scholarship by the Mathematics Education Trust (MET) of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
“Winning this scholarship was a really great honor,” said Snyder. “The scholarship was funded by the Demana-Waits Fund through Texas Instruments and distributed by NCTM. These organizations are composed of great leaders in both mathematics and education, so receiving recognition from them is truly amazing. Throughout my educational career, I’ve been very fortunate to have had great experiences and relationships with my teachers and professors. With the help of this generous scholarship, I hope to become a great teacher myself and similarly influence students in a positive way.”
The $10,000 scholarship is awarded to two full-time students nationwide studying to be certified secondary mathematics teachers. The scholarship funds are used to help cover the costs of tuition, books and other academic-related expenses.
The scholarship required candidates to submit a written proposal outlining the remaining two or three years of coursework required to earn certification, a detailed outline of the full-time study required, title and credits for mathematics and mathematic education courses completed to date, and a budget to fund the plan. In addition, recipients of the scholarship must be student members of the NCTM.
