Jane Elliott Utterback Weimer - 1996 Ada Citizen of the Year, funeral service Sept. 9

Jane Elliott Utterback Weimer, 93, of St. Marys, formerly of Ada, died at 3:15 a.m. July 26, 2012, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 27, 1918, in Frankfort, Ky., to Robert Elliott and Vercil LeCompte Utterback, who preceded her in death. On Nov. 4, 1944, in St. Marys, she married David Weimer, who survives in St. Marys.

Mrs. Weimer graduated from Frankfort High School, Frankfort, Ky., in 1936. In 1940, she received her bachelor’s degree from Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky. She received a master’s degree in Christian education from Union Theological Seminary, New York, in 1945; early childhood education from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, in 1966; and library science from the University of Denver.

She was the director of Christian education for First Christian Churches of Frankfort and Louisville, Ky., and was an educational missionary in South India in 1947. She retired in 1987 after 18 years as a professional librarian with faculty status at the Hetrick Memorial Library of Ohio Northern University.

Her Ohio Northern activities included Kappa Phi adviser; Amnesty International; Faculty Wives Club; ONU Women; Faculty Religious Affairs Committee; United Religious Association Council; Ohio Library Association; Academic Library Association of Ohio; Beta Phi Mu library honorary; Women’s Health Initiative Study of The Ohio State University; Hardin County Literacy Council; Lauback tutor of adults and international students; Lima Symphony Association; Zetetic Club; West Ohio Food Bank; and Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen.

In 1996, she and her husband, David, were selected as Ada Citizens of the Year.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Ada, for 35 years and was on the administrative board. She was a member of the United Methodist Women; the tape service for homebound members; membership and evangelism committee; missions committee; a certified lay speaker; and a member of the Lima District Council on Ministries; West Ohio Board of Higher Education; West Ohio Merit Scholarship Committee; Older Adult Committee, Lima District; a volunteer in mission at Sue Bennett College; Henderson Settlement, Ky.; Scarritt-Bennett Center, Nashville, Tenn.; and Northwest Ohio Kappa Phi Alumnae Chapter.

She recently attended Wayne Street United Methodist Church, St. Marys. She was an Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community volunteer and a member of the Spiritual Life Committee, Chapel Committee, Campus Store, Susanna Wesley Circle, POST Drama Group, Prayer Chain, Band and Partner Appreciation Committee. She was a visitor to patients in assisted living, nursing and memory support unit.

Survivors include two sons, Kirk Lee (Judy) Weimer, of Arvada, Colo., and Paul Christian Weimer, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Carole (Russell) Miller, of Westlake, and Holly (Eric) Geiger, of League City, Texas; five grandchildren, Russell David Miller, Bryan Patrick Miller, Aaron Michael Weimer, David Allen Geiger and Julie Beth Geiger; two stepgrandchildren, Stasia Vinnedge and Kattie Roush; and great-granddaughter, Ella Jane Miller; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Madeline and Tabitha Roush; and one sister, Martha (Byron) Green, of Grand Junction, Colo.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert H. Utterback.

Memorial services will begin at 2 p.m. Sept. 9 at the English Chapel, Ohio Northern University, Ada. The Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel will officiate. Interment took place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada.
