Katie Mengos leads three Polar Bears in double figures as women's basketball tops St. Mary's (Ind.) 77-62
Senior Katie Mengos scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Ohio Northern women's basketball team to a 77-62 victory over Saint Mary's (Ind.) on Sunday in the Saint Marys Thanksgiving Classic.
The Polar Bears improve to 4-1, while the Belles fall to 2-3.
Mengos led all scorers with her 20 points. Junior Cenzie Yoder added 15 points and senior Joanna Snyder chipped in 10 points for ONU.
SMC had four players score in double figures, led by Ariana Paul with 16 points.
Northern took control of the game midway through the first half, using an 11-0 run to take a 24-13 advantage with 10:05 gone in the contest.A basket by freshman Carly Thomas put ONU up 40-23 with 2:22 left in the half and the visitors led 42-27 at intermission.
The Polar Bears stretched their lead to as large as 75-50 on a basket by Yoder with 5:57 left in the game. ONU made 28 of 62 field goal attempts for 45.2 percent, while Saint Mary's made 25 of 56 field goal attempts for 44.6 percent.
Northern won the rebounding battle by a slim 36-35 margin.
The Polar Bears will return to action Saturday with a 3 pm contest against Marietta in their Ohio Athletic Conference opener at the ONU Sports Center.
